Sitting in my back garden just now watching the Ockham stack come over my house for 09L finals, i have noticed a lot of aircraft do not have underwing registrations now. BA do AA dont to name 2. Was it a legal requirement at all, and if so when did it stop. Back when i started looking skyward in 1960 most,if not all had them.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Ron

It is not required to have the reg on the bottom of the wing. Alot of carriers used to but have now stopped.

I believe that it was required in the US until the 1930's but went away about the same time that the second letters in the registration went away.

Some countries require it, some don't.
Some may also require it only for certain classes of aircraft (for example light aircraft so the controller can more easily identify them as they buzz the tower).

I wish it should have registration underwing for all US carriers. I would able to identify the aircraft when I use binocular or without it. The ID are too small on the back fuselage.

Ron,

Yes, I "copped" quite a few LHR movements in and out of the airport from my home in Woking back in the sixties. The one big exception was anything registered in the states - everybody else seemed to apply underwing marks.

Presumably, as technology advanced, there was less of a need for these on airliners, at least.

Ray,
Retired from BT at 52 with a nice pay off, it was a case of 'i must be mad to refuse' Since then i have seen the share price drop from 15.00 pounds to what it is now. Gives me a nice feeling whenever i go back in the Rolls-Royce to take the piss out of my old boss telling him it was his fault he got rid of me!!
Did some filming for Carlton TV on Sat doing a wedding, it was ok, and to keep this a/c oriented the a/c have been over all day on finals to 09L and Concorde looked superb tonight going overhead. Will really miss the old cow( and for out US friends ,thats a term of endearment, i even call the Royce the 'firms van') A great fathers day, good barby(or barbie) and a bottle of exceptionally good french red, and while we are on the subject of the French and the anti french feeling in the US, When are you lot going to give back the Statue of Liberty?
Thanks for all the input on the reg situation, Can anyone else remember the Scandinavians that had the prefix on one wing and suffix on the other,? could read those with the naked eye when i lived in North London and they were coming off Lambourne stack, Caravelles, Viscounts DC4/6/7 even Convair 340/440and the odd(and very odd Bregeut Le pont.Happy days

We did give back the Statue...it is mounted on a pedastal on the Seine...(You pretty much have to take the boat tour to see it!)  Smile

Come on, it is all politics and American's have a short memory so the next time Brittany Spears gets a new boyfriend we will move on to something else trivial. (But how come no one jumps on the French for being anti-American like when the farmers bash McDonalds etc?  Smile ) But if anyone can convince the McD's in France to send whatever sauce it is they use on Big Macs over there here....it is sooo much better than the crap they put on here.

And just to keep things on the thread....Notice the Mexican's put the reg on the lower part of the wing...
