Northwest's A330, Delivery July 7?

I apologize beforehand if this topic has been discussed, but I'm under the impression that NW is recieving an A330 on July 7??

Also, when they do start service with this aircraft, what routes are they planning on doing with it? Domestic, International or both? I know the DC10's did quite a bit of Domestic routes, will the 330's do the same?

I'm willing to bet that it'll be used on Domestic short hops initially, so that it can clock up some flight hours. After that, I think it was meant for Atlantic flights, not so sure about that though.

It is being delivered 7 July. It starts proving after that...it is the first aircraft for NW to be ETOPS rated. After training flights it is scheduled to begin service 2 September DTW-LGW (though that is subject to change)

No, DTW... all flights ex-DTW will be A330 (which should happen by late February, HNL is the exception) before MSP gets its first delivery...

The 1st A333 advanced for NWA is at Le Bourget currently and will be put into service next month (see Airbus´website).

I've read on a Dutch message board that the first NW 330 is expected next week 23 June @ SPL
It will overnight there and fly to the US the next day

Seattle is slated to be a test flight from DTW, also DEN as high altitude landing test. Other tests are to be to Europe.

Since flying to Europe will require crossing the ocean and being away from landing spot for more than a specified amount of time, Europe WILL NOT be apart of the ETOPS test program. The first planes will be flown in the domestic system to get the airline certified to fly ETOPS a/c. ONce that is done, they'll launch them over the Atlantic... starting Sep 2. Nothing has been published in the schedules for the domestic flying and don't expect it until late summer.

BUMMER, that A330 was supposed to be at Le Bourget starting on the 14th ... that way jderden777 and myself could have seen it on the 15th when we were there for the Air Show!

We were even in Toulouse from the 10th-12th of June in hopes of seeing it but it had never even done one proving run prior!!! Grrrrr lol.

Looks hot though.

What are the chances of the NW A330 showing up on the MEM-AMS flight anytime soon? It seems like it would be an excellent fit for this route, and NW has publicly stated that they plan to fly the A330 into Memphis. The flight is currently flown with a DC-10. The NW 330 has 25 more seats than the DC-10, but that should be close enough in size to warrant consideration for the route. Plus, I'm sure the 330 is MUCH cheaper to operate than the DC-10.

BTW, NW now has the A330 listed on the seat map page of their web site.

I'm glad that they are getting some 332's as well. That will be great in potentially opening up some more European routes. Right now, all NW has out of MSP is AMS and LGW as they have to fill up at least a DC10 to make it work. NW seems to be one of the only US majors who didn't go with 767's at any point in time and this will hopefully allow them to do some routes that may not have been able to work in the past with an entire DC10. Perhaps with a smaller aircraft like the 332, that could open some more routes out of MSP (CDG? OSL?).

NW's B742 fleet will likely be phased out (from passenger service) within two years, while the DC-10s will be retired by 2006. That's a total of 40 planes being replaced with 24 (that isn't exactly a fair statment, since B753 will likely take over SEA/LAX-HNL and A320s most flights within Asia). Thus, aircraft utilization will be high (utilization of the B742 has been low for awhile) and scheduling tight... this doesn't leave a lot of room for expansion. And any new transatlantic destinations will come from DTW... MSP may get FRA and CDG in a few years (when things pick-up) though.

NW never acquired the B767 because they weren't happy with its cargo performance... remember: NW first purchased the A330/A340 in the late 1980s.

Eventually MEM-AMS will see the 330. After all the 330 is the trans atlantic flagship a/c of the future. But all 24 aren't getting delivered overnight, it will take a few years to get them in the fleet. It makes total sense to launch the 330 on competitive routes like DTW-FRA and DTW-LGW both of which are operated by their respective flag carriers. DTW-AMS is only servied by NW/KLM so launching a better product on a direct competitors route makes the most sense. Eventually the 330s will replace the 10s in all markets... According to Anderson in the formal presentation at the air show he said the NW will launch the aircraft in conjunction with KLM into their hub in AMS. So maybe they're just keeping us guessting where the first flight will be.

When NW ordered the A330, they operated 24 DC-10. They ordered 24 A330. The A330 order was meant to replace the DC-10 one-for-one; the DC-10 will be retired when the A330 deliveries are complete.

Azjubilee, as I went on professional day and not a public day, there was no visit in the aircraft. Fewer people on professional days which is good, but then certain things are missing, like visiting the interiors of planes or gifts from different stands (!). just drinks and munchies whilst discussion is being held.
I must say the NWA330 looks very nice as is the Qatar baby bus. The 777300ER looks very impressive tho I did not get to see it fly.
