I did remember that just after the SIA fabulous offer, you said that CX will never ever dump tickets cos they have an image etc etc to upkeep. Oh well!
All Asia Pacific airlines need to do this to stimulate travel. I have been in France for a month and made 3 visits to England. From what i've observed, most travel agents advertise for intra-EUrope travel. As for transcontinental, the USA is about as far as it goes.
For Asia-Pacific travel, you have to practically dig information from your travel agent to get a quotation.
For Europeans and Americans, travel to Asia is a once-in-lifetime one-off kind of event. At the slightest hint of trouble they will not go. Same thing goes for people like us who are Asian-based. We'll think twice before making that 15 hour flight round the world.
Since SARS has given the Asia-Pacific region such a bad name, stints by SQ and CX to entice people from the other end of the world to travel are absolutely necessary. Then they can go home and tell their friends what a fabulous place Singapore/Hong Kong is and why they absolutely MUST make the trip again. ANd they cycle continues.....
What's bad is most Americans and Europeans had ALREADY made their summer travel plans at the peak of the SARS outbreak which is why forward bookings for the northern hemisphere summer were looking weak..... until of course our respective airlines started to give "fabulous offers"
Now, it costs as much for me to go from Paris to Munich as it is from Paris to Singapore. Maybe I should just take a trip to Singapore the next weekend!!
