Driving To SFO On Monday!

Hi!

Well I finnally made it! I went to SFO this past monday. When I was on my way to move during 1 year to California my first reservations were with BA and flying from LIS/LHR/SFO on their 777 flight. Things changed and I actually landed at LAX with SWISS, but now I had some family coming to visit us and the airport choosed was SFO. So here I went all the way from FAT to make a nice trip and get to SFO some 45 before and take some time to spot a little. It was actually quite fun, I never had a any clue about this airport but in some way I expected something like LAX, well that was completely different!!! Lots of traffic but mainly UA ones, so just for the ones that like a small taste what I saw here it goes:

UA - I saw landing 1 744, some 757's, some A320's, lot's of EMB120's and CRJ's
T/off I saw 2 777's
AA - I saw t/off 1 MD80 and parked a 762 and a 738
DL - I saw landing a 763 and parked a 757
CO - I saw landing a 738
HP - I saw t/off a 73S ( ?!?!? ), a A320 and a A320 landing
NW - I saw t/off a D10, a A320, landing a A320 and parked a 757
AC - I saw t/off a A320 and landing a A319.

International airlines there I saw:

LH - A 744 t/off
NCA - A 74F t/off
KL - A MD11 t/off
BA - 2 744's parked
AF - 1 744 parked
CX - 343 parled

Different planes there:

A Kitty Hawk 72F and a DHL DC-8-70. Also I saw some 2 or 3 UA 744 parked, and a 727 ( looked like a 100 series ) derelict! Can anyone say more about this?

CV990-The 727 that was over at Super Bay (The Large Hanger) is a training airframe for fire/medical emergency/and highjack training. Seems like you were here during the afternoon. If you are here later in the eveing you'll get more of a mix of airlines and aircraft. Mostly after 6:30p. SFO may not be any LAX but it has its own image. Hope you enjoyed your trip.

Well, actually I really enjoyed beeing there! I found out a good place to see the airplanes, I don't know the name but I can explain, it's the left-out on 101 before the airport one, then I turned right and all the way almost untill the end of that road, then you have a left turn and right away there is a small park with about 10 places to park the car, and you have some seats and there is a pedestrian road by. You see the planes just coming in, it's a bit far away but with the binoculars is not bad! Then when we went to the airport I found it a very beautifull one, reminded me a little like ZRH, lot's of light and neat, so I can say that I really enjoyed it and I think from now on if I have the chance to fly from Portugal to California I will go for SFO at least one way!!!
SFO is actually a great city too, reminds me a lot LIS.

To a certain extent, SFO is a smaller version of LAX. It has its fair share of heavies and international aircraft. However, LAX definitely has more variety in airlines and destinations. My only quibble with SFO is its predominantly UA traffic. LAX has a more evenly distributed array of airlines.

The good new is guys, that there could be a promising chance off seeing a TZ expantion here. I have some internal rumors from ATA with projected routes. I know they have been in talks woth the airport over fee's. That would bring a nice new blend of color to the south terminals ramp. keep your eyes open for some new and maybe we will see 10-15 more ATA birds running threw here by the end of the year.
Also we may see Emirates next year, AirTran in the fall of this year, and still hearing Air India and Thai are looking at SFO. I sure hope!

SFO has always been the maligned alternative to LAX. The concept of SFO is that it really is one large terminal. You can walk 360 degrees. AND, we have a lot of art and museum pieces to see while there. BART (the regional Bay Area Rapid Transit) line to SFO from San Francisco and the East Bay areas just opened this past Sunday making transfers throughout the area fast, convenient, and cost-effective. Actually, SFO pre-dates LAX by years - Mills Field (its original name) dates back to the late teens or early 20's of the twentieth century - LAX was orange groves!

As to service from SFO, there is no question that UA is the largest presence at the airport. In fact, historically, beside the late-lamented Pan Am, United was the major (and only carrier) to Hawaii aside from the blueball express (an old term for PA). Only in the past 3 years has SFO come into it's own. With the new International terminal, we are getting a great deal of business. The only drawbacks at SFO are the runways. The San Francisco Bay on which the airport stands is a major area of protected wildlife preserve, so that battle ensues with regard to expansion. The surrounding residential areas protest the noise, although the airport was there long before places like Millbrae and Foster City (built on land fill in the bay in the '60s). I'm glad you enjoyed SFO. It's a terrific place staffed with some of the most knowledgeable airline people in the U.S. To even work here, one must have a great deal of seniority (we call this area God's country).

Am I proud of SFO? You bet I am!

I think if it weren't for the fact that KIX has such ridiculous landing fees we would have seen several more airlines fly to SFO on transpacific routes. DEL-KIX-SFO would have done well for AI, especially given the large ex-pat population from India here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I will not be surprised that SFO will become a major A380-800 destination by 2012, with SQ, LH, VS, KE and possibly AF flying to SFO. If JL buys the A388, SFO will also be a primary destination, given San Francisco is a major tourist destination for the Japanese.

Let me know if you'd be up to hanging out in San Francisco.
I know of this awesome aviation theme bar & grill named 'The Orbit Room' on the corner of Market & Octavia.
The bartender 'Air Alberta' makes great cocktails and she is an aviation NUT!
The entire place is decorated with 1950s and 1960s avaition related artifacts such as; airline bags, old posters, model planes and cocktails with avitation related names.
