I just reserved myself a seat on UA947 from IAD to LAX on July 11. The travel agent told me that the equipment type would be a 747!! Alright! I have flown many times on 747s but each time it is a treat and I am really looking forward to this trip. It will be awesome I hope. Additionally, it is my first flight ever on United Airlines. I have heard some bad things about their service but I am hopeful that it will be a great flight.

Anybody else ever fly on this route? Is it usually a 747? Will it be a 744 or a 742?

I work as a pilot in Europe but I still get giddy about flying even as a pax on a Boeing 747! It is still exciting.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

UA has no more B747-200s in the fleet, so most likely you'll be on a B747-400...

Enjoy, politely ask the flight attendant if you can visit the cockpit either before departing for LAX or after arriving into LAX, to say hi to the crew. I find it better to ask the flight attendant about 3/4 of the way to LAX when they are least busiest and almost every time I've asked the flight attendant was more than happy to ask the flight crew if a pax can come up to visit, @ the end of the flight. I was lucky enough to fly on Korean Air from LAX - ICN, and spend probably the whole time in the cockpit from start to finish talking with the flight crew and their relief crew. Flying in the cockpit of the 747-400 is totally awesome.

The 747-400 is an amazing beast. I flew it for the first time in 1998 Lufthansa ORD-FRA. It's amazing, just the pure power and size just does it for me right there!
