Aerocaribe And Mexicana To Fly From Cuernavaca

After Aerolineas Internacionales ceased flying because of bad maintenance, and after some people here in the forum (including me) discussed the possibility of an airline starting operations from Cuernavaca, the answer has been given.

Mexicana states in an ad that was yesterday on the Reforma newspaper, that they will start operations on July the 15th to Guadalajara and Monterrey. Schedules are as follow:

Cuernavaca-Guadalajara
Tuesday to Saturday 7:05

Guadalajara-Cuernavaca
Monday to Friday 20:00

Cuernavaca-Monterrey (Operated by Aerocaribe)
Daily 6:30

Monterrey-Cuernavaca (Operated by Aerocaribe)
Daily 21:55

Excellent news! I guess there was a market big enough for airlines to enter this city near the capital!

I just hope they keep the low fares that Aerolíneas Internacionales (N2) had.

I guess the success of the load factor for N2 flights from MTY and GDL was based on two things:

a. They were flights heading to the border, TIJ... and having intermediate stops in MTY, CUL or GDL and HMO... If MX and QA does not keep that routing, I am not so sure the pax will be there to fill those planes.

b. Prices. N2 had very competitive rates for flying to MTY and GDL... Lot of people used N2 and CVJ (Cuernavaca) as an alternative for flying from MX), Mexico">MEX because a prices were well below those by JR, 6A, MX and AM... If fares go up I foresee people not using CVJ as an alternative to MX), Mexico">MEX... And I doubt CVJ market will be large enough for supporting flight to only MTY or GDL with no continuation to TIJ...
At least me, who have used N2 as an alternative for flying MX), Mexico">MEX-MTY will not choose QA from CVJ if the fare is the same as flying from MX), Mexico">MEX.... May be I will think about it if there were mainline flights from TLC-MTY for the same price.

What are your thoughts?

As matter of fact, CVJ (Cuernavaca, Mariano Matamoros) Airport and the government of the State of Morelos have been negotiating with Mexicana and AeroCaribe for 4 months (before A. Internacionales stop flying). The only thing here was that AeroCaribe wanted CVJ airport and the state government to make some improvements to the main terminal in order to start operating. But since Internacionales final flight, QA and MX started working in order to start flights as soon as possible... they don't want to loose time and they want the people that flew Internacionales to have the same options.

Last Friday, Aerolineas Internacionales was sued by the Mexican Institute of Social Service in order to recover some $$$ from the unpaid contributions to the Institute, it is expected that more companies sue the airline for unpaid bills like ASA (for unpaid Jet A). The corporate headquarters of Internacionales in Cuernavaca are empty and there is nowbody attending the 800 line.

I agree N2's success derives from the fact that they flew to the border. I guess the flight to Guadalajara is a good option as there are flights to LAX and TIJ from there. Monterrey, I guess really is for businessmen. CVJ is an economic center and if you can give them a direct flight, I'm sure they'll take it. If they can save the trip to the capital, they will.

Thank you for the info! Didn't know there was going to be competition in CVJ. Would have been interesting to see flights from N2, MX and QA.

Do you think QA and MX will grow on this airport?? Is there any chance for that??

To tell you the truth, it all depends on how QA and MX market this flights. As Pedro and you said before, the success (if any) of Internacionales in CVJ was that flights ended in a border city, TIJ in this case... While I was in Columbus, OH last month, I went to buy a tree with my cousin, and guess who gave us the tree we bought??? Right, a Mexican working in the US. I started speaking in Spanish and first he was afraid, maybe because he thought I was an undercover agent, but after I told him I was just on vacations, he told me that he was from Jojutla, Morelos and that many people from his town had migrated to the northern US; so you can imagine the market they have in CVJ. You also have to consider that people trying to reach the border does not have education and they don't even know the internet or read the newspaper, and when they buy an airplane ticket, most of the times it is their first or second one, so no price sensitivity... What we have to see from QA and MX is how they market this flights and if they are considering growing from CVJ, because people migrating won't be able to fill 5 daily flights, so they have to market CVJ as an alternative to Mexico City airport, which is very tough to do, since there is a lot of price competition with flights in Mexico City and with ZE growing there, you will have to offer very cheap fare to make people take the journey to Xochitepec, Morelos, which is farther than Cuernavaca (20 more miles).

Lets wait and see how MX and QA perform during the second quarter of 2003!!!

I don't really think there is a huge market between CVJ and MTY or GDL. Consider QRO or PBC:
1. Both cities are even farther from MX), Mexico">MEX than CVJ...
2. Both cities have larger population than CVJ (according to INEGI 2000 Census, ZM Puebla has 1.6 million; ZM Querétaro 650,353; while ZM Cuernavaca has 633,912 inhabitants)
3. Both cities are larger industrial poles than CVJ. In fact, QRO is the fifth larges industrial center in Mexico (MX), Mexico">MEX, MTY, GDL, TIJ and QRO, where TIJ obviously stands for maquiladoras).
4. And yet, both cities have only a couple of ATR42 operations to MTY or a sinlge DC9 from GDL to PBC.

I wish MX and QA success in their operations in CVJ. I would really like to see CVJ turning into a developing market. But to consider CVJ as a large market by itself, might be dangerous... After all, I think N2 strategy was not that bad: cheap fares, vuelos guajoloteros to the border, and an alternative to south MX), Mexico">MEX.
