i imagine planes are pretty well protected, i heard somewhere that an airplane has on average one lightning strike per year. what exactly could happen and has anybody been in an airplane when it happens? must be increadably loud

Last year I was on a Delta MD-88 which was hit twice by lightning on the way to ATL.

I was onboard a KLM743 that was struck by lightning while on finals into Dubai from Karachi a few years ago. It happened in the middle of the night--it seemed like the aircraft shut off for a fraction of a second--the captain came on the PA system and reassured us everything was good to go and we landed into DXB with no further complications--it was a frightening split second--but me being the airline freak i am actually enjoyed it.
