My apologies AJ - for some reason I thought NY had been suspended. This thread was really a dig aimed at the fact that QANTAS changed the wording of the song from Rio to Rome to fit in with their network and are shrinking back from being a major international player to a major regional player.
I really loved this song (and if you get a chance to see Boy From Oz there's a great send-up of the QANTAS treatment) - but I really think it's now run its course.

I think QANTAS could do with a new theme song. This one is kinda old and boring in my opinion. They really need to produce better tv commercials too- the current one with the kids singing sux. I like their old commercials from the early-mid 90's better which used to focus more on the planes and airport scenes.

hm...i really like the song. And it seems to always bring tears to the australians who live outside australia (for example, read the book Almost French by Australian expat in Paris, Sarah Turnbull). so it has great emotional impact.

Please expand on your comment that Qantas are shrinking. Yes they recently dropped Rome because they were not making profits however they are expanding services to the US. It is just a case of deploying your assets to make the best return.
Qantas will never be able to offer the same number of European destinations as the Asian and Arab airlines simply because Australia is at the end of the line and QF can't operate a hub operation to make secondary European destinations viable.

Speaking of the JFK-LAX-SYD run on Qantas, can you be ticketed on JFK-LAX on QF.
I know that on the SVO-JFK-IAD run on JFK you can't be ticketed on JFK-IAD..anyone know the reason for this, and the gate is not in a special zone taht is only for international

I have a grainy copy of the original "I still call Australia home" ad (with Kate Cerebrano, et al.) My eyes have welled up more than once--and I've been magically drawn to Qantas.com more tha once after watching the ad. (I haven't been back to Australia in more than 12 years).
The ad is effective, patriotic, and beautiful. The ads with the choir are unique in their own right, but less rousing than the original.
