Will Airtran 737s Have IFE?

Will the new 737s Air Tran is getting have the standard IFEs you find on other airlines' 737NGS? I.E. flip down screens and audio?

I doubt it...Airtran's policy is to go with the cheapest interior options possible. The 717s they bought from TWA still have TWA seats in them! I don't know how they plan to compete with JetBlue and Song without the IFE though. Direct TV is very nice for transcons.

I would say no as the Ryan A320 aircraft has them and AirTran has elected not to use them to keep everything consistent fleet offering wise. Tho who really knows at this point!

AirTran's passenger surveys say low fares are more important than frills. However, it might be a competitive necessity.

Alaska Airlines' surveys have said essentially the same thing. Besides, integrated IFE systems add considerable weight to the aircraft, resulting in higher fuel burn overall.

Perhaps FL will opt to do something similar to AS, opting to provide DVD players in their Business Class and entering into an agreement with a provider like InMotion, giving discounts on DVD rentals to the main cabin customers?

Why not install Legend-style recliners and complete office suites and an individual secretary for each passenger and have hot meals and roof-top windows so you can see the stars and a free lawyer for all transactions made while aboard?

This is not AirTran's business model or niche. FL offers services for small business entreprenuers, middle-managers, and cheap tourist fares. Adding the weight and expense of IFE does not offer them a competitive advantage in their particular market, at least not right now.

Besides, more and more people have their own carry-on IFE in the form of laptops, portable DVD players, and walk/disc-mans. And there's always the In-Flight magazine.

No, this is not an expense FL wants on its Profit/Loss sheet.

I agree with Elwood. If I want to watch a movie, I'll go to the cinema. If I want to watch TV, I'll go to my den. If I want to travel accross country, I'll look for the best price and take a book. You TV addicts should try them sometime, they can make time pass on a 4 hour plane ride better than any form of airline sponsered inflight entertainment.

With the fleet set up the way it is and will be (mainline with 717s and 737s, and JetConnect with CRJs), IFE is not really a frill that would have a need. With most of AirTran's flights being in the 90-120 minute range, IFE is a luxury, not a need. With the west coast flights, they could be a call for them, but the best bet would to offer units for rent on the concourse (InMotion Pictures doesn't have a shop on C). Another option is to provide powerports so that people can hook up devices like laptops (the original portable DVD player), PDAs (heck they're getting to be like little IFE units themselves). IFE is a very cost intensive service to offer. Besides the equipment needed for it, you have the fees to have the programming produced for you. Southwest has managed to go without IFE for over 30 years, and AirTran shouldn't start being like JetBlue and offering seatback TV (JetBlue will probably return to charging for their IFE).

Good service, great fares, and a good product count for more than the ability to watch Game Show Network or HGTV for a few hours. I find jetBlue appalling, but I'm pulling for AirTran. This new aircraft order is exciting. They offer a product more competitive with the network carriers, in my opinion, than any of the other LCCs. Business Class, elite tier FF system, service to smaller markets.... just on a lower cost structure.

You are soooo wrong here... many people said the same thing about the Web and just about every other technology out there. TV in the sky is here to stay.

Exactly. Then again, typical Americans don't know how to occupy themselves without sitting in front of a television.

I find IFE unnecessary, except perhaps on very long haul flights. Who can't occupy themselves for five hours? A person with a small mind indeed. Why not do away with the PTVs and further lower their costs, passing that savings on to the passenger?

Not really. Like all PTV systems on other airlines, the screens can only be seen if a person is directly in front of the screen. From any other angle, the screen looks pitch black. And the screen can be turned off.

There are two problems with IFE as I see it. One, it adds operational complexity, and LCC's really avoid operational complexity because of bad experiences in the past. Though I suspect new IFE installations it adds less complexity than early attempts did. That is probably how JetBlue gets away with it. Also, when you have IFE, customers begin to expect it. Then they get mad at you when they don't get it because or a breakdown or whatever. NOW it is mostly considered a value-added perk, on domestic routes. When people begin to expect it, that is when it may harm customer relations and also get more expensive as a greater degree of reliability is required.
