Breaking News: Two Killed in Small Plane Crash at Memphis Int'l

A small twin-engine plane crashed on approach Wednesday morning at Memphis International Airport killing two people aboard the plane. The piston engine plane crashed on Runway 36 Center. That's near 2505 Winchester.

The Federal Aviation Administration reports the Beech Baron crashed at 10:06. The Memphis Fire Department reports two other people were injured. Clint Buchanan, the director of the Shelby County Emergency Management Agency, says it appears the plane flipped when it landed. He said it does not appear to have any fire damage.

The owner of the plane is Dr. Daniel Greenwald of Tampa, Florida. Dr. Greenwald says the pilot of the plane is his business partner, David Cahill. There is no information on Cahill's condition. Dr. Greenwald does not know who else was on the plane.

Northwest Airlines says half of the airports runways are currently open and the crash has not affected commercial airtravel for Northwest.

NWA was commenting because the media wanted to know if this accident delayed any of there flights out of MEM.

People died in a horrific crash. Yeah but people gotta make their flights on time! Can't let that drag them down...

I misinterpreted your post the first time I read it. It is kind of sad that the media seems to care more about possible delays caused by it.

Condolences to the family and friends of those affected....

I don't think that's what Acidradio meant. I believe he was referring to the fact that the media appeared to be more interested in NWA's operation than the families of the victims of this crash.

Acidradio is right. I watched the TV news at noon and their attitude was this : Well we're gonna report on this because we're here... we thought it was going to be an airliner that lost an engine or something interesting like that.

No joke, really kind of sad. This is why I don't watch local news.. they can be so stupid sometimes.

At 1000p they had this animation of the plane coming into a dirt strip.. bouncing..flipping.. and crashing. Worst of all they inserted that cheap Windows default sound of something crashing.

Pretty sad.

There was an article in the Orlando Sentinal this morning about the crash. The pilot was a Tampa based Neurosurgeon and the plane was owned by a Tampa Plastic surgeon

The Memphis newspaper reported that this is the first plane crash on Memphis Int'l Airport property in more than 30 years.

The TV news and media in general will trivialize anything to make ratings. It is not really news-gathering anymore, rather it is entertainment. That clip with the Windows sound, it is silly and gathers attention, which is all they want so they can garner some ratings. What makes it even worse is how the reporters are completely scripted so everything they say pertaining to this is totally off-the-cuff and automatic.

"Two people died while on approach into MEM but this isn't effecting NW's operations at all so this will not even be a MINOR INCONVENIENCE to you." We wouldn't want an airplane crash to inconvenience people in an airport in any way now...

That and the media is biased towards the business world. That is why they did not focus on the plane crash itself but how it would effect NW's operations in MEM that day. What is ironic is that news media in itself is fairly liberal but they know who runs them and pays the bills...

My sentiments exactly Acidradio----I think that may be our first crash in a very long time. The last major emergency we at MEM was when a FDX flight engineer attempted to hijack a DC-10 and crash it into the MEM hub.
