Changing Terminals At LAX

Another quick question regarding transfers at LAX. I'm scheduled into LAX on Delta which operates out of terminal five. I have to then transfer to a Southwest which operates out of terminal one. I've been to LAX several times, but I have never had to transfer. How long will I need to claim my bags, change terminals, and re-check my bags? Also, do you have to walk to change terminals or is there ground transportation?

It is possible to walk from T-5 to T-1 at LAX -- allow about 20 minutes. If walking, I recommend taking the upper level sidewalk, from which there are lots of great, closeup airside views at the terminals along the way. Or, as AirDD mentions, there is shuttle service that connects all terminals for no charge, running at about 5-minute intervals. To allow for long lines at both check-in and security -- a regular occurance at LAX -- plan your arrival on Delta to be at least 2 hours before your Southwest departure.

If you have a lot of time (and little baggage) I'd walk around to Terminal 1. It's a ways but the views of the intl. terminal are great!

As many have suggested you can easily walk around with luggage on wheels, no problem, however you can easily walk across too at ground level if you know your way, it's faster but that's not what you asked. As you are changing terminals you will need to claim your checked bags and make your way to terminal one then check in and go through security identify yourself 50 times (because?) and make your way to the gate, allow yourself a total of 2 hours of waiting and queue time just in case.

I recently arrived at Terminal 4 walked around to Terminal 2 and did everything you will do in just 40 minutes but I had no queues at all to contend with and passed security without extra checks. Unfortunately most airlines don't interline baggage with Southwest so you'll have to claim it and lug it around and recheck it.

Have a great flight

To comfortably do everything, give yourself over an hour. You should also make time to do some spotting. Terminal 5 has great views of runway 25 departures while terminal 1 has great views of runway 24 arrivals.

I am wondering if I should spend the extra $45 and fly America West between LAX and PHX so then I could just interline my baggage. Although it doesn't seem like it's going to be too difficult to claim and re-check my bags at LAX.

FrequentFlyKid,

Don't bother. They'll probably get lost @ LAX anyways. It's not worth the extra $45 since you will probably have to travel through baggage claim @ LAX to get out anyways.

Unfortuneatly, I can't expand on any of your other questions since I've only been through Terminal 4.

Thanks for all your replies! In case anyone cares I think I am going to spend the extra $30 and fly America West. This way I can interline my bags and fly standby if my Delta flight should be delayed or whatever. Plus, don't get the opportunity to fly HP very often.
