British Airways Suspends San Diego And Others

British Airways has today announced its route schedule for the winter 2003 season. The new schedule reflects the airline’s strategy of focusing on commercially viable routes.

The network changes, which start on October 26, 2003 unless specified, are:

* A new service from London Gatwick to Turin which will operate on a daily basis until December, 2003, when a twice daily service commences. In addition, from April, 2004, there will be a new service from London Gatwick to Dubrovnik in Croatia which will operate three times each week.

* A new twice daily service from Manchester to Copenhagen.

* Additional frequencies from London Gatwick to the Caribbean commencing in December 2003. Flights to Antigua will increase from seven to 10 each week and flights to Barbados will increase from eight to 10 each week.

* Flights to Bilbao in Spain will switch from London Gatwick to London Heathrow.

* Services from London Gatwick to Bremen and Brussels will be suspended from September 1, 2003, and the service between London Gatwick and Dusseldorf will be suspended from October 1, 2003. The service between London Heathrow and Zagreb in Croatia will be suspended from September 14, 2003, and the service between London Heathrow and San Diego will be suspended from October 26, 2003.

Martin George, British Airways’ director of marketing and commercial development, said: “These announcements continue our strategy of focusing on commercially viable routes and suspending those services which don’t make a financial contribution to our business. Although some routes are being suspended, we are starting three new European services and adding extra frequencies on our popular Caribbean routes.”

Another change for the winter 2003 season is that British Airways’ flights from London Heathrow to Johannesburg and Tokyo will operate from Heathrow’s Terminal 1 instead of Terminal 4 from October 26, 2003. Both these routes have a high number of transfer passengers, many of whom will no longer have to swap terminals at Heathrow for their connecting flights.

This is the first phase of British Airways’ flight switches between Heathrow terminals which will help make better use of the existing facilities prior to the opening of Terminal 5 in 2008.
To support these additional longhaul services, a major programme of infrastructure improvements is taking place at Terminal 1 including new lounges and check-in facilities.

That's too bad. I did a SAN station tour back in July 2001 and the only other highlight after my airline's DC-10, was seeing BA's 777 from the ramp.

Jase, we are all well aware that airlines such as BA, who are not propped up by the State, cannot afford the luxury of flying to every city on earth. And I'm sure we'd all agree that we would rather BA drop loss-making routes than keep them.

NEVERTHELESS, it is still sad for all of us aviation enthusiasts when a particular airline ceases to fly somewhere. Personally, I am sad because I flew this route in November, and thought the approach and landing at SAN in the 777, not to mention all the great scenery & convenience of flying to one of California's prettiest cities non-stop from my city of residence (London), was highly pleasurable.

Whilst I do understand the move, and agree with it, it still saddens me.

I'm sure BA has done their homework before cancelling the San Diego service. I agree with one of the other letters that it is still sad.

Why did they stop the SAN-PHX-LHR service, then? I guess going through Phoenix was better than not having any service at all!

Sad news indeed for SAN, but not surprising in this environment.

Note, however, that BA intends not to cancel SAN-LHR, but suspend it. Perhaps we will see it return by next summer as SAN-PHX-LHR, if not nonstop.

Too bad I never got to fly the nonstop service. With antitrust laws preventing cooperation between AA and BA, I am confined to American for my trips to Europe.

Hopefully they will just reinstate the LHR-PHX-SAN-PHX-LHR route like they had in the past with the 747-400. From what I understand the PHX route is filling up the 777 most of the time, so they would probably have to upgrade the equipment for the San Diego tag on. I miss the 744 in PHX, plus this way San Diego doesn't loose their London flight altogether.

Hi!

I don't what's the driving time from LAX to SAN but probably because BA already serves SFO and LAX it could be quite redundant.
BA currently have 2 744's daily flights to LAX and another 2 744's to SFO so looks to me that if they needed to cut some of their routes SAN would be one of them. I also believe that probably during summer time they'll come back, SAN have a lot of turistic potencial in the summer and people probably would like have a direct flight to Europe, we'll see.

CV990 -- the drive from SAN to LAX is definitely annoying. With traffic it could easily extend to 4-5 hours. I suspect BA feels that AA can supply enough connecting customers into LAX/ORD/SFO/DFW that it's simply not worth having the nonstop.

Sllevin- I used to live in LA up until last year and it never took 4-5hours to SD even withthe traffic. On a good day it took 1.5 hours and on a bad day 2.5-3 hours. Some Southern parts(LA metros portion of Orange county some of Orange County is closer to metro SD) of the LA metro area are only 60 miles or so from SD.

About LA, when I visited SAN back in November, I was told by the hotel staff that it was certainly possible to drive up to LA, so long as it was after 11am, and I got the hell out of LA before 4pm at the latest. Outside those times, driving to/from LA is apparently madness - and I can certainly believe that, given the profusion of highways in & around the LA area.

With the BA flight, I guess they thought SAN has a) Tourist potential for Brit travellers (exactly why I went...) b) SAN is known as having a relatively wealthy population, who would be willing to pay a premium to travel non-stop to Europe.

Guess one or both didn't work out, or work well enough given BA's tremendous problems at the moment (hey, at least they made a profit in 2002 though!!)

I'm not an expert, but I'd certainly be willing to pay up to $100 more to fly non-stop to SAN, and therefore avoid a drive from LA during commuting hours.

I hope BA reinstate the route, although it does give me an excuse now to fly a US carrier instead!

It's 130 miles between SAN and LAX and I remember it taking over 2 hours with light traffic to get down to San Diego from LAX. I also remember it taking about 2 hours from SAN to a friend's house in Mission Viejo with moderate traffic.

Normally it is always cheaper to fly via some place or the other, but last November BA were offering some stunning deals to cities on its US network, and I bagged a non-stop to SAN for 260 pounds, which at the time, was cheaper than all the other options available.

I think DoorsToManual's second inference about BA's objectives in SAN turned out to be the least successful, and therefore the primary reason why they have left for the time being.

In coach, the flight was always overbooked. There are many, many people, therefore, who want to travel between San Diego and London. However, Business and First Classes never really filled up, obviously because the downturn in the global economy (thanks to 9/11, Iraq, SARS, etc) greatly reduced business travel. San Diego businesses just weren't inclined to spend the money on premium class travel with the slumping US economy and the virtual recession in Europe.

If the economy picks up over the next few months, I am confident that BA will return by summer 2004.
