Back in the late summer of 1979 I flew from JFK to SYR on DARK red plane, as only being 6 years old I do not remember the airline or type. I do remember it was a narrowbody aircraft. We flew from Austria to JFK on KLM and connected into SYR on this mystery airline. Any help would be greatfully appreciated in identifying this airline and aircraft.

I want to say this was a TWA flight but I am not 100 % sure.

Thanks

Glenn

Could it have been Apple Airways (or some similar name?). I remember their planes were Red with maybe a dark orange stripe down the middle.

If I have time- I'll look it up.

Was it New York Air ? Were they around in '79 ? I vaguely remember seeing them in ROC long time ago.

United Fan.

I believe it looked just like the NewYork Air picture that you posted. I dont believe BI flew into SYR but I am not 100% sure. But the NY Air looks the aircraft we flew on.

Thanks

Hey guys... just wanted to let you know this whole site is pretty amazing! I have been following for the past few weeks, and It is fascinating how someone asks a simple question, in fact... questions that while simple, require a good amount of research and expertise, and it gets widely answered!

Even though I've worked in aviation for 16 non-stop years, you simply don't realize how many people love this business and its mystique!

Anyway, this question is a great example of what I refer to...

Good Luck!

Looks like New York Air didn't exist in 1979.

7/79 OAG shows four flights a day JFK-SYR: two Allegheny DC-9s and two Empire Metros.

I'm no expert, but I'm guessing NY Air never flew to Syracuse. Or maybe JFK either?

NY Air did not exist in 1979, I think they began operations in the early 1980s are flew from LGA/EWR to BOS and DCA, they did try some other destinations but Syracuse, to my knowledge was not one of them.

In 1979, a red airplane would suggest Allegheny, (the old name of US Airways), which had a red/burgudy livery and did fly between NYC and Syracuse (not sure about JFK, but certainly LGA)......DC9s, and BAC 111s were on the route.

Has to be Allegheny/USair.

Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.

Dutchjet,

As I remember we flew out of JFK to VIE on KLM, so I am guessing that we returned via JFK but I could be wrong. It sounds like Allegheny may have been the airline. The flight was late at night when we returned. And I do remember a dark red aircraft I believe with white markings. I will pull up some Allegheny photos tonight to check. Thanks everyone for the help. This is way I love Airliners.net everyone is willing to help each other out.
