First, why didn't Boeing decide to use sidesticks like Airbus's on their 777s and newer airliners? Is it not economical or feasible? Also, do they plan to update their yokes to sidesticks on their new 7E7 cockpit, if it ever goes into production? What're your opinions?

Cockpit commonality. Well, I mean basic, not like A340 to A330, or 757/767 only certified. No other Boeings have joysticks, so why start now? There is no major benefit from joysticks over yokes anyway.

Most pilot train with yokes unless they are fighter pilot. All of boeings planes have yokes. I bet you Boeing pilot would prefer the yoke better. And airbus pilot would not really care. Sure if boeing did get rid of the yoke many other aircraft would still have it. But there is no reason for changing the way most people think flying is all in. Just no reason. I have an flight sim yoke i the only reason i try not to fly my airbusses all the time is because the yoke is easier. I have even talked to pilots about that and they all seem to go more with the yoke.

Boeing thought that a yoke would be easier and more comparable to a steering wheel in the car. If you look at it that is mainly what a yoke is. Airbus put yokes into the A300 if i'm not mistaken. They thought that a person would feel more comfortable flying a plane if it felt like they were actually driving their car.

The reason Boeing went for yokes in the 777 was fleet commonality i say. It would have made things harder for airlines from a training point of view if the 777 had a sidestick. It doesn't make any difference anyway- the 777 is fly by wire just like the A320/A330/A340 are so the yoke is really unnecessary since there are no control cables connected to it. The majority of pilots who swear by the yoke are Boeing pilots who have never tried the sidestick so they are biased towards the yoke. I used to have an A320 pilot as a lecturer of mine during aviation theory- he had flown the Metro/Saab 340/BA 146 and then went onto the A320. He said the sidestick is so easy to get used to it's not a drama. It's a case of personal preference.

When Boeing was working on the 777, they asked for and received a lot of input from the airlines about what they wanted. When they asked the Flight Ops group whether we wanted yoke or sidestick, the majority went with yoke.
Having flown fighters as well as the A320 and Boeings and McDs it didn't really matter much to me. I did miss the lunchtray on the bus though.
