AA Launches 4th Daily FLL-LAX Service

Wow. AA is not taking the compieition from Delta and jetBlue lightly.

New flight:
AA 1782 LAX 1025-1809 FLL
AA 1787 FLL 1930-2207 LAX

Flight operates with a 737-800. American currently operates two daily 757-200 and a daily 737-800 on the route. This makes for a total of nine daily flights between Miami and the Los Angeles area on American. In addition to the FLL service, three daily 763s, one daily 752, and one daily 772 from MIA. Also serving the route are United (1x 752 from MIA), Song (1x 752 from FLL), and jetBlue (2x 320 from FLL to LGB).

To think that in January of 2002, FLL had one non-stop to Los Angeles. As recently as May 2003, they still only had two dailies. Come November 1st, they will have SEVEN.

There seems to be a real "market share" battle taking place in FLL these days between AA, DL, WN, B6, and NK. The way I score it so far, DL has the lead with AA not too far back. It's almost like a horse race.

Definitley agreed. Delta has the very strong lead and they are not about to loose it. They have built up a very strong network from FLL, especially in the past year adding DCA, CMH, LAS, LAX, RDU, and BNA, plus AM/MEX. There's more to come too, I'm sure. Some RJs to GSO, BHM, IND, and/or a few other places would not surprise me. DL service (on Song) to the SF Bay area is only a question of if, IMO, not when. Plus, they have a very airy and clean terminal all to themselves to do whatever they want with. It's wonderful, and I hope they keep growing.

American's network at FLL is also very strong. DFW, ORD, SJU, LGA, LAX, NAS, BOS, STL, SDQ, and PAP. CCS is likely to come next year. They build thier network mainly based on the high number of AA FF'ers in the Miami area that choose to avoid MIA and fly convinently out of FLL. It's a very smart move on thier part to have major presence on the major MIA O&D markets from FLL, as its a good way to protect marketshare. They have thier own terminal leg (half of T3) to themselves, though I think the new SDQ/PAP flights are going to arrive in T4 and depart from T3. This year they added two more flights to LAX, two more to BOS, one to NAS, SDQ, and PAP. Nice growth.

Spirit, this winter, will be running seven, count them seven, daily round-trips between Lauderdale and LaGuardia. And their new Spirit Plus service has been a huge hit and a huge boost for yields. It frequently sells out in advance. However, when it comes to two other markets, they are lacking. They have been wanting to do FLL-West Coast for a while, but without the planes, thier FLL-OAK/LAS/LAX hops have to stop on the way. A major weakness point and they will have to play a game of catch-up with AA and DL when they finally do get the proper airplanes. Also, they have been talking and bragging about thier LatAm expansion for about two years now. So far, the only action taken was a DOT application for FLL-CUN. They plan to start FLL-CUN in the fall, but have not announced it yet. AA's FLL-SDQ/PAP flights, are, though, without a doubt in place not only because there is demand, but to protect marketshare.

Southwest has a new gate area to themselves, but have yet to do much with it. They have a decent prescense at FLL, but limited non-stops. CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO, TPA, JAX, MSY, BNA, MDW, BWI, and ISP, plus weekly non-stops to MHT and DL / KBDL), USA - Connecticut">BDL during the winter. Where is BUF? MHT? PVD (720 passenger a day O&D market)? HOU? AUS? ORF? It seems they want everyone to connect through TPA/CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO. Though they are getting plenty of new planes, so we'll see.

jetBlue is a unique position. They are very well-established in the Miami area, and while they are not immune from compietition, they have established such a loyal customer base that some customers often will not even bother checking another airline's fares, because jetBlue, to them, is the only way to fly. This is what excellent customer service, an efficient fleet that is almost always on time, and the friendliest FA's in the sky gets you. They are adding four flights to FLL this winter: two to JFK, and one each to IAD and LGB. Look for OAK and SJU evenutally and maybe some others. The problem is they share thier half of T1 with Continental and Northwest and only have two gates of thier own, and already are sharing a third with CO. They have hope if CO, NW, or both join skyTeam and move to T2 with Delta, but at the same time, there is hardly enough room to handle CO/NW and thier 48 daily departures from T2.

Let me start out by saying I always enjoy reading you posts, they are very informative and I do always learn something, like I did not know that JetBlue only has 2 gates in FLL! WOW! Also I agree with your analogy of JetBlue and it customer base and employees. The others could learn from this upstart if they truly wanted to, or cared for that matter.

Well, this is great move for FLL and kept growth more their nonstop from FLL-LAX is been adds fourth flight on this year of Nov. 2003. Keep it up really need more expanding nonstop out of FLL soon.  Smile Thanks!

There's no way CO and NW could be moved over to Terminal 2 (DL's) at FLL as DL has barely enough gate space for their own flights. In fact, DL averages between 12 to 15 RON's per night which exceeds their gate capacity of 9. I know CO has quite a number of flights at FLL and NW not as many but still way too many to operate out of T2 (especially when one considers IROPS). I think CO/NW could and should join DL at Concourse H in MIA which is much nicer than Concourse G and has adequate capacity. In fact, it would be great if Concourse H housed all of SkyTeam member airlines.

Agreed with you Re: CO/NW at T2. As for skyTeam and Concourse H, that already has been confirmed. AeroMexico, Alitalia, and Air France are all moving to Concourse H in 2006. They are converting eight gates to international, widebody (including one to A380-capable) as we speak.
