A small single engine aircraft made an emregency landing at Meigs Field today due to an electrical problem. I believe it landed on the grass adjacent to the torn up runway. Wonder what Richy Daley has to say about this one?

i still have trouble understanding how he can honestly call that airport a "terrorist threat." with that airport there, and the tower operating people knew exactly what was going on in that airspace. now, nothing! what a moron! i seriouly hope that the next time i drop stuff out of my airplane i hit him!

Mabye the Chicago Park District will think twice about doing something about meigs and think they did a stupid thing. They had someone from the FAA say something about it but I hope this works.

What strikes me as even more odd...Every year Chicago is home to a huge Air and Water Show. I feel that Daley should eliminate that as well. I mean, according to his theory, any one of those aircraft in the show can veer off course and crash into downtown. I think I am going e-mail his office and ask why he hasn't pulled the plug on the Air Show on Chicago's Lakefront.

I always have a special place in my heart for Meigs. Always used to fly out of it on FS2000, it was the first place that came up when you turned on the game. Lol!

It's on all of them, since the first one to the 2002 version. The Airport links to the game cause of the creators liked the airport and liked to fly in and out of it.

Man.. this is just another point in our favor for reopening Meigs. I hope as hell she gets a new runway- hell, they should even expand her into the lake to bring in some larger planes.. that'd piss daley off

According to the news report, the aircraft will be repaired on site. After that, the Chicago Park District will allow the aircraft to take off from Meigs. Wow, how nice of them to let the guy have his plane back.

This topic gives me an idea, the next time I'm up in Chicago, maybe my plane will have an engine failure over Lake Michigan and I'll get to put Meigs in my logbook Haha right! Anyways that guy might be the last guy to get to put CGX in his logbook. Hey look on the bright side though, despite Daley's best efforts to stop it, somebody still landed at Meigs!

Yea, surprised those d*ckheads didn't arrest him for treaspassing.
Anyway, here's another letter I wrote to Chicago in reply to the letter they sent to me (posted in another thread).
July 23, 2003
Cortez Trotter
Executive Director
Office Of Emergency Management and Communications
1411 West Madison Street
Chicago, IL 60607
Dear Mr. Trotter,
I appreciate your reply to my letter regarding the closure of Meigs Field. But after reviewing your letter, I must wonder exactly what you say the city is trying to "mitigate" by closing the airport. Your letter may serve to convince the less educated that they are safer without the airport on the lakefront, but someone in your position as the top dog at the Office of Emergency Management should understand the value of Meigs Field in the event you are called into action should an emergency actually occur in your city. What better way to get emergency supplies and equipment to the downtown area quickly than to have a downtown airport? In my view, Chicago has aggravated, not mitigated, the safety risks to the city. Perhaps you should pose this argument to the folks who actually made the call to shut down the airport.
In addition, wouldn’t you say (from a security standpoint) it is important for someone to identify and communicate with aircraft operating close to downtown? As you can see from the aeronautical chart below, the dashed circle shown below represented a five mile radius of airspace controlled by Meigs Field Air Traffic Controllers. This airspace covers a large portion of the downtown area (shown in red) including the Sears Tower. Aircraft entering this airspace were required to identify themselves and communicate with Air Traffic Control or else they would be labeled as suspicious. Now that the airport is no longer in operation, this airspace is now uncontrolled and can be used by any aircraft without identifying themselves or communicating with anyone. Is Chicago really safer now with the airport closed? That’s a question you’ll have to answer, but I think not.
Sincerely,
_______________

What I would like to know is if someone is flying from Michigan to Wisconsin, what are they doing near Chicago? It's about 85 miles out of the way? (Unless they were following the coastline route (VFR)).

I find it ironic how Daley called the MDW security situation a disgrace when he's a disgrace to the aviation community. He should shut up about aviation in the city since he's the problem that caused a lot of the congestion (esp at MDW).

Daley knows Jack Schitt about Aviation. He couldn't possibly begin to know what it feels like to need an airfield. All he is interested in is making his wife happy with a new park because his "performance" is not up to par and this is the only way Dick Daley can keep his park happy wife. Ok, That is speculation
But I mean it when I say that Dick Daley couldn't understand what his city possibly needs. KICK DALEY OUT OF OFFICE.

Jeremy,
Next time you write, don't ASK him (wouldn’t you say (from a security standpoint) it is important ) but TELL him (From a security standpoint it is important).
When you ask him, obviously the answer is no, so what's the point.
Sorry if this is seen as beside the point...just my advice.
25 Chicago757: Yeah, Mayor Daley's excuse for closing it down was because he said it was a threat to the town for terrorism. YEAH...RIGHT............Those cessna 152

27 Crank: The proper answer to Dailey concerning the closure of Meigs Field would be to dig big fat X's in his damn park, that'll piss him off. [Edited 2003-07-
