Virgin Blue Goes International

DJ has finally gained approval to fly internationally. This quote from Australian Aviation:

" Virgin Blue gained approval on July 12 from the International Air Services Commission(IASC) to operate international services from Australia to New Zealand, Fiji and Vanuatu from October this year.
The airline has received approval to operate up to 1,260 seats per week to Fiji, 720 to Vanuatu and unlimited capacity to New Zealand. Virgin Blue's international services will operate under a new brand name with Virgin Pacific considered by some to be a strong possibility. Early on 2 of the airline's fleet of 33 737's will be allocated to International services, although that could increase after its 10 new 737's begin arriving. The airline plans to increase its capacity on the routes to the full number of permitted seats within a year of starting operations".

So Virgin Pacific is becoming a reality. I wouldn't be surprised if the new brand would also become a new entity - quite separate from the LCC model of Virgin Blue and eventually closer to Virgin Atlantic.

So if Virgin Atlantic reaches Australia within 18 months (or by this December), and Virgin Pacific starts flying internationally early next year, what would be a likely timescale for a linkup of networks?

Personally, when daydreaming, I can imagine Virgin linking up to Australia by 2010 or 2015 via Hong Kong, Los Angeles, perhaps even Singapore and Dubai (and, who knows, maybe even South Africa), with the second leg of each flight being operated by Virgin Pacific. It might be mean the possibility to bypass laws that prevent picking up passengers along the way, by using 2 different airlines that form a close alliance.

Anyway, 2 737s in New Zealand is a sensible & modest startup. Sounds like they have their feet firmly on the ground and realistic growth plans...

Apparently SQ has said that the new operation cannot use the name 'Virgin' in the title as it will be viewed as a competitor to the Virgin Atlantic co-owner.

You'd think that Ikarus, to quote the AFR a few days ago 'Virgin Blue plans to launch international flights later this year under a different brand because of opposition by Singapore Airlines to the use of the Virgin name for its expansion.'

I am not a fan of LCC and ususally i don't care about them, but:
why doesn't Virgin Blue fly to asian destinations to get connection to destinations from Virgin (not blue)?
