I have been thinking about this for the past couple days at work. (I have a very boring job) and I have come up with a couple of ways.
1. Better cooperation with Air Canada, hopefully increasing their loads on the YYZ-WAW route.
2. No benefit in America, all that changes is that alliance with American is dissolved and a new one is formed with United, so really not much difference.
3. More codesharing with Lufthansa on all the Germany-Poland routes which will reduce competition and increase profits.
4. Little more cooperation with SAS and Austrian, that with some codeshares will free up some LOT aircraft to open new routes in Europe.
5. So that is about it for the benefits. They really wont contribute much to Star as they only give star about 10 new cities if that. So basically how else will Star help LOT? I think LOT may need to open some new intercontinental routes like to Miami or somewhere in Asia, because I worry that with their small network, joining Star may be the first step to them being swallowed up by Lufthansa and basically being turned into a regional carrier.

As for the new routes this will depend on what the deal was with Star. Concerning western routes this might be limited (look at LH's routes, and AUA and SAS), but could benefit for the eastern routes.
5. LOT in Miami? Come on, this is a joke. Montreal more likely, they used to do Edmonton and Calgary or Vancouver (either of them).
As for Asia Bangkok was dropped a few years ago, and so was Beijing. Same thing Dubai.
Some people think LOT will be a feeder for LH. By the way, LH is thinking of buying Swiss, which has a 27.5% stake in LOT (interesting), a backdoor entry?
How much A is there is Airliners Net ? 0 or nothing ?

The reason I mentioned Miami is that if my memory serves me right about a year or two ago they were about to open this route, where they even had signs up in the Miami airport, but the route never got opened up. I have no idea what happened in that situation. I think they dropped the Asia routes becuase it was very expensive to fly over Russia and that made the route unprofitable even though the loads were good. I am not sure what has ever happened with this situation though.

The most important contribution LOT is making to Star is bringing in a big, fast developping market (a country of 35 million). LOT + Lufthansa + AUA + SAS will have like 80 percent of Poland-Europe capacity. Apart from Warsaw, the Star Alliance will have a complete monopoly on flights out of the regional polish airports. The opening of this market to all E.U. airlines is supposed to happen sometime next year. Hopefully some low cost carriers will compete on selected, profitable routes. What the Star Alliance domination is doing to the market can be easily seen by comparing fares for Warsaw/Krakow-Frankfurt destinations ($400+) with Warsaw/Krakow-London ($200) because of the LO competition with BA.
Speaking of the U.S. routes I wouldn't be surprised to see a WAW-IAD route opening soon to feed pax into United system.

Was that stake sold to Swiss ? I was under the impression that Swiss, as a separate company based on Crossair, didn't inherit it. So the stake would still be owned by SAirLines or what's left of it as no buyer has shown up yet.
