Just wondering....the 757-300 has 4 doors and 2 window exits on either side. however, the 767-300 has some combination of 4 total exits, with a comparable capacity. the 767-400 only has 4 doors on either side. Even the 777-200 only has 4 doors on either side, despite a significantly greater capacity than the 757. I have never really understood this discrepancy. It just seems that the 757-300 has a far greater number of exits per passenger than do most airliners. Does the -300 have too many exits, or should other airliners have more exits to facilitate evacuations and escape? I appreciate any input...

I think they need that many exits because the B753 is a single-aisle (and very long) aircraft. Current FAA regulations say that to be airworthy, the aircraft needs to be capable of an evacuation in 90 seconds with only half the available exits. That's not easy, especially with the congestion of a single-aisle aircraft.

It's a combination of the fact that the 757 is single-aisle and that the doors on aircraft like the 767 / 777 are double width (and so in theory two passengers at once should be able to evacuate side-by-side).
