The new tower that just opened at Orlando Int'l Airport is claimed to be the tallest in North America at 345 feet. How tall is the one in Denver?

A Google search for "tallest control tower" turned up numerous articles on the Orlando airport tower.

According to the Sept/Oct 2003 issue of Airliners I received this week.
Orlando is the tallest in the US at 345 ft. It was dedicated 10/28/2002.

The tallest in the world is in Kuala Lumpur Int'l Airport at 425 ft.

Bangkok is planning to build a 433 ft control tower at their new airport.

Here is a link to the Orlando tower iinfo

what is it with asia and tall structures? petronas towers in kuala lumpur, that new skyscraper in taipei and now airport towers? the US(where all these tall structures started!) is falling behind these days. makes me jealous. i hope we start building more great structures(and great airline fleets too!) after the terrorism threat subsides.

The spires on Petronas Towers make it technically taller than the Sears Tower. But Sears has the highest occupiable floor by a long shot. Put any two pictures (to scale, of course) of the two buildings side-by-side and 99 out of 100 people will tell you the Sears is taller.

When are you Americans going to learn how to think big?  Big grin

Ever see the proposed Millennium Tower in Tokyo? It would have 170 floors, stretching to 840m (over 2,750ft).

And by the way, it's not Japanese - it's British. Big grin

What's the point of having a tower so high? 425 ft seems a little excessive. Sure you can see more of the airport but is it really necessary? You'd definitely be wanting an elevator in that tower, imagine climbing 425ft's worth of stairs. :-o

Oslo Gardermoen's tower is about 300ft tall, which means that its top disappears into the fog when the cloudbase is low. Very useful, I'm sure.  Insane

So it's:

Orlando 345'
Miami/Denver 333'

I did a search myself (should have done this first), and found that the tower at IAH is 336'

But then of course I found this too, At 280 feet above sea level, Logan Airport's air traffic control tower is the tallest control tower in the world.  Big grin

How big is JFK's?

Yeah I figured that MCO's was one of the tallest, you can see it for many miles down the Road on Highway 436 Semoran Blvd. I can see it from Curry Ford Road and that is a good 6 miles

SDF has a pretty new tower -- reaching 270 feet. But not as big as MCO, MIA or DEN. But up there in the ranks of the taller towers.

The need for a high tower has to do with the controller's job. He has to make sure the runway is clear before he can give clearance for a t/o or landing.
Even though AMS has a pretty high tower, the new fifth runway is too far from the tower to observe. That is the reason AMS now has a second (operational) tower near that runway.

FAA Commissions Tallest Air Traffic Control Tower at Orlando International Airport
Thursday, September 19, 2002

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA ) commissioned a new state-of-the-art air traffic control tower at the Orlando International Airport. The new tower, at 345 feet is the tallest in North America.

"The new tower is an ideal environment for air traffic controllers to continue to provide the safest service to the flying public," said Carolyn Blum, FAA Southern Regional Administrator. "With its increased height and advanced technology, the tower is poised to support the impressive growth of the Orlando International Airport today and well into the future."

Attached to the new tower is an 11,700-square foot base building, which contains the electronic systems and administrative offices. The new tower and base building are located near the old tower. Total cost of the project is $28.7 million. It was built by FAA and funded by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. Ongoing and future airport development, and the need for controllers to have unobstructed views of the entire airfield required construction of the taller tower, which sits 126 feet higher than the facility it replaces.

"It has always been our vision to provide the facilities to meet this region`s demands for aviation. This project enables the airport to expand with few constraints," said C. W. Jennings, Executive Director for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. "The partnership in developing this facility demonstrates our commitment to safe and efficient travel."

More than 120 FAA employees work at the Orlando Tower, 105 air traffic control employees, and 24 airway facilities employees who maintain the building and air traffic control equipment. The Orlando Tower handled over 326,000 operations in the year 2001, making it the 34th busiest tower nationwide.
