Continental Airlines Fleet - 1974

How many of each type of aircraft were in Continental's fleet during the second half of 1974? Were they still flying 707's?

I'm not really sure as that was way before my time. But perhaps if you did a search of the photo database during that period you may find much of the info you're looking for.

In 1974 I'm pretty sure Continental was flying DC9s, DC10s, 720s, 727s and 747s.

The 747s were being phased out in favor of additional DC10s, while the DC9s were slowly leaving the fleet in favor of additional 727-200s. My 1973 OAG shows Continental still flying 720s on many of its trunk routes (LAX-DEN-MCI-ORD was the backbone of their system), and I think those aircraft stuck it out until 1978 or so.

CO had just about gotten rid of all its DC9s when it merged with Texas International in 1981. Then they inherited a whole fleet of 'em.

I think that 1974 was prior to the Continental/Texas International merger. At that time, CO was flying 720, 727-100, 727-200, 747-100 and DC-10-10 and DC-10-10CF aircraft. A couple of years later, the 720 and 747 types were retired and CO purchased 2nd hand 727-100 aircraft from United and additional 727-200 aircraft from Boeing. The 747s were far too big for the routes that they operated, a mistake most US carriers made in the early 1970s.

The Proud Bird with the Gold Tail flew the widebody airliners on the important ORD-DEN-LAX and ORD-LAX routes as well as on several routes out of IAH, including the newly granted MIA-IAH segment.

Also, CO, at the time, operated a South Pacific network flying from HNL to AKL, SYD, MEL and I think Fiji and Pago Pago.

Thanks, I was thinking they had DC-9's and 720's and wasn't sure whether 707's had already been phased out when the DC-10's came in.

Does anyone have any information about the number of these aircraft that were operating in their fleet at the time?

I'm pretty sure CO Micronesia flew 727-100s back then on the Islandhopper route too from HNL-MAJ-KWJ-KOS-PNI-TKK-GUM. Why are you so curious about the second half of 1974? That's when I was born, by the way.  Smile

The DC9s operated to smaller stations (like Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, Wichita Falls and Colorado Springs), while the 727s served intermediate or high-density markets like Phoenix, Albuquerque, Oklahoma City and Tulsa. They also flew off-peak flights between places like LAX, SEA, DEN, PDX and ORD.

The DC10s and 720s flew more heavily traveled routes. In 1974 the DC10s were flying: ORD-DEN-LAX, IAH-LAX, DEN-SEA, IAH-MIA, LAX-HNL, LAX-ITO and SEA-HNL.

I think the "Proud Bird" days of the 1970s were some of Continental's best. They were making money hand over fist, their employee morale was amazing, and their planes wore the beautiful gold-tail colors. If only they'd known what was coming in the next decade.

In regards to the 707/720 fleet, the 707s were retired by late 1973. The 720s stayed until early 1976. They had 18 707s & 8 720s. My source is the Aeromoe fleet page at geocities.com. Hope that helps. Regards.
