Taken from Air Cargo Week this morning:

Search for twin-engine diversion runway
A decision by the US Military to close the runway on a remote Micronesian atoll means that carriers flying across the Pacific need to find an alternative emergency landing strip.

Extended-range twin engine B767 aircraft flown by Air New Zealand to Honolulu and Los Angeles will be among those services affected. Services by Air Pacific, Polynesian and Qantas en-route to Hawaii, American and Canada will also be hit.

Airline ETOPS legislation requires that cross-ocean twin-engine aircraft are never further than three hours from an alternative airfield.

Other runways being considered are at Majuro in the Marshall Islands, and Kanton and Kiritimati (Christmas Atoll) in Kiribati.

With the 777NGs possibly to be certified for up to 330min diversions... they certainly wouldnt need it.
