I was also wonderng this, Cancidas...I think they were great and were a delight to see...now, the livery is relatively boring...the previous ones were so very different and colorful and unique in their own ways, and I used to love reading where they came from and thought that the various designs on the luggage tags/tickets/meal menus etc were great.

ATC was having trouble at night identifying planes taxiing around with the logo light only showing these pieces of art, and that's one of the reasons why they're one their way out. It's a shame, though.

Also the British public got a bit stuffy about the lack of a standardised livery for their 'flag carrier'.

Pity, I really used to like the different designs on the tails...

Good riddence. I thought they were hiddeous. I think they never should've gotten rid of the Landor markings. They were truly a classy look. So much better than anything else out there.

I hate the Union jack livery, it is so boring, every plane looks alike now.

Margaret Thatcher made a big fuss at some event and put a hankerchief over a tail of a BA model plane with a world tail and said that it was hideous. Has Margaret ever looked in the mirror?

Fortunately at MCO we don't see much of the Union Jack scheme here on the 777. I have mainly seen Chelsea Rose and i believe Denmark.

Kudos to Jetjack for speaking the truth. The WorldTails were hideous. Bring back the Jack, and make BA even more British.

And watch what you say about Lady Thatcher, HlywdCatft. That's no way to talk about my idol.

It was not the British public being 'stuffy' or Maggie Thatcher not liking them that got them axed in 2000, it was the very negative reaction from customers, who cares what planespotters think?
I think a pilot on a 747 with that Chinese marking as shown above who summed it up best in the tech log;
"Large deposit of a black tar-like substance on the tail'.
£60 million pissed away on them, same time as a very plush H.Q. for the bosses was built.

I thought they were dreadful too! What a complete waste of money. The Landor scheme was just so classy.

BA never really recovered over that fiasco though there were other external forces going on as well.

The Landor scheme was probably one of my all-time favorites, looked so classy, esp. on the 747's. I don't mind the World Tails, but the newer standard livery isn't very awe-inspiring, if that makes any sense.

There is not really a 'flag carrier', it is just talk appealing to nationalism etc etc. SRB says virgin is britains flag carrier, BA says theyre the flag carrier. Hell for all we know bmiBaby is the flag carrier!!

Well, uh, that´s what corporate identity is all about...
Each design on its own was aesthetically quite pleasing (well, most of them anyway) - but that was no way to present yourself to the outside. And especially to your main cash cows, conservative British businessmen.

It wasn't British businessmen who were the problem, it was Americans - the reason American's like BA is because its British - Navy blue Nanny cabin crew, tea and scones on afternoon flights, fawning servility to the wealthy and connected (ie. Gold Frequent Flyers). Surveys done amongst American frequent flyers revealed that they didn't want world-friendly bunny-hugging, they wanted Jeeves and stodgy puddings - so that's what they get.

Sad but true - but as pointed out before, that's the business.

Of course the Union flag is not bad... just a bit usual, ordinary...like many other Airlines...

The "World Tail" concept was pure Genius ! original, creative, Artistic...
so "new", compared to these traditionnal sempiternal boring blue, white, red colors, stripes, stars,circles... whatever...you can see everywhere !

At least with the world tails it made up for that boring "Eurowhite" fuselage.

Fortunately I still see variety in the daily 777 colors that flies over my apartment. I can tell you if it is at least Chelsea Rose or Denmark. But if they went to the boring Union Jack all the way, i couldn't tell you which 777 it was.

I am a fan of airlines having variety- thats why i like airlines like Frontier with their animal tails, West Pac with their logo jets, Braniff with their flying colors.
