I just looked on Flightarrivals.com and saw that a Korean Air is bound for DTW. It was diverted from YYZ, but why? Detroit is affected by this big power outage too, why not just continue on to YYZ or land somewhere else that has power.

According to the network news, all of Ontario is without power.

The power outages had different effects in different places. Toronto Center had also lost some radio frequencies, unlike Cleveland Center, so that probably played a part in things. Lots of vaiables on a -normal- day, let alone an abnormal one like today...

Actually I found out later that DTW was actually open despite the city of Detroit being without power for some reason.

Thats an odd choice for a diversion airport. Unless the flight was severly fuel restricted, I wouldve requested that it divert to ORD or CVG. At ORD they couldve had KE staff (if they were able to come in on such short notice!) on hand for the pax, and at CVG they couldve had DL/Skyteam staff waiting for the flight. I image that securing ground handling in DTW will be much tougher for that flight.

The flight went on to YYZ. It did appear to go to DTW but changed 5 minutes later.

Depends on what they would do, if they just parked it on the tarmac for a couple of hours while waiting for clearance they wouldn't need to do anything much.

Last summer DTW was hit by severe storms and a lot of NW flights including international flights from ROme and Tokyo and Osaka were diverted to TOL.
