Does anyone know anything about AA's A300s... like when they got them, why they ordered them when they already have the 767, how are they used today, how much longer u think they would be in service... you know, anything that you might know. Just something i always wondered about.

Well we all know how Airbus has murdered the 767 recently because the A330 can take side-by-side LD3s and the 767 can't. Because the 300/310/330/340 basically all have the same fuselage, the A300 can do this as well, while AA's huge 767 fleet cant. The order was in 1987. American uses the A300s on the Latin American routes, which have a big demand for cargo and baggage space. Also AA got really cheap leases on the 300s. I would expect them to switch to the 7E7 when this becomes available, or when the lease runs out and the leaser tries to raise the rates. Then they'll be out of AA's fleet real quick. If the 7E7 is only available in an international version (ER) and proves inefficient for shorthaul routes (which wont happen unless we start having pig strikes instead of bird strikes because of the major's transcontinentals {to be a success the 7E7 will to be able to the everything an A300, A310, A330 and 767 can do}) then there is no telling what AA could do.

the lease does not run out. It's like... insane terms. They are leased from Airbus directly, I believe. The leases may be terminated at any time, with just one month's notice, at NO COST- not penalties, no fees, just a smile and a handshake.

Aside from tails falling off and cabin pressurization problems, I think they have been reliable birds.

They were ordered in a scheme of strong-arm tactics with Boeing. Boeing made AA mad over some issue with 767s being configured... not AA's way, so AA said, "We're going to order A300's." And Boeing said, "Ha, we'll believe that when we see it." And AA said, "oh yeah?" So they went to Airbus and did just that- 35 of the bloomin' things!

Well, Boeing gave in and configured the 767s the way AA wanted them. IIRC, it was an issue of available engines.

Seriously though, you need to do a search for this topic- it comes up monthly, and there is a wealth of information on this webiste that has been discussed to death. You may find info that proves me incorrect!
