I just flew on JAL business class JFK-NRT-JFK. Cabin comfort and service were both outstanding (10/10). Flight attendants were friendly and came around constantly. Entertainment was a bit limited (7/10). I like Japanese food and enjoyed the Japanese meal options (9/10). Overall I give these flights 9.8/10.

I would say they are almost identical. They are in a fierce competition against each other since day one. I believe PTVs are installed in coach, relatively new aircraft, on-time, and young and very courteous flight attendants etc.
I think the language barrier could pose a problem for some travelers during a flight. Sometimes the English public announcement made by ANA or JAL FAs are difficult to understand. If you have a special request during a flight.. good luck. Also if you end up missing a connection in Japan and you have to deal with JAL and ANA customer service representatives and you don't understand a word of Japanese that could be tough too. But generally the Japanese airlines employees are very courteous. Their attitude makes up for it.
Im curious to know if anyone had a real bad experience with JAL or ANA. If so please share.

I've flown ANA, ANK, and JTA (JAL group member) many times on KIX-OKA-KIX and OKA-MMY-OKA.
I was pleased with ANA's service on KIX-OKA-KIX although they've cut back in service since I first flew with them. Very attentive and courteous FAs and extremely reliable - no delays. My only complaint is the very high fares.
On my OKA-MMY-OKA flights JTA has cut back in service to about nothing. Not a really big deal on a 45-minute flight but ANK offered more attentive FAs and offered audio entertainment. Both were extremely reliable, I haven't had any major delays with them.
I agree that it is usually difficult to understand the English spoken in Japanese flights, but I've never had problems with requests. On my last flight with ANK, I requested a newspaper in English and they started repeating announcements in English after that which I thought was VERY nice of them.
