Air Canada Slowdown/Shutdown?

Within the past hour I received a call from a distressed Air Canada passenger effected by a canceled AC flight LAX-YVR, inquiring about re-booking possibilities on the airline I work for. The caller, calling from LAX, said "it looks like Air Canada might be shut down."

Is there some type of labor action going on at AC or has their schedule been effected by the power outage in the Toronto area -- or anything else happening to cause a seemingly clear-thinking passenger make such a statement?

The power outage in Ontario and NE USA basically shut AC down until 1600 Aug 15th and only that is on a limited basis. All USA flights will begin to start on Saturday. They will be repositioning their aircraft over night to ramp up services over the weekend.

Check out: http://www.aircanada.ca for updates on their flight status.

Air Canada's op center lost its backup power.

Air Canada also lost thousands of passengers who will no longer fly on them due to TERRIBLE (not bad, but terrible) customer service.

From AC website:

"The airline is currently investigating the cause of the secondary power generator failure which had recently undergone its regularly scheduled 30-day maintenance check. In addition, by this morning the offsite location contracted for use for operational recovery had become unavailable to Air Canada in view of the magnitude and impact of the power outage in the Toronto area."

A dangerous chain of unfortunate events for AC. Lots of delays plus few cancellations at YVR so far.
