Spirit Airlines will re-start service to Washington National this fall, although a start date has not been determined (before 13 November, however). Spirit Airlines will offer two daily flights between National and Ft. Lauderdale, and not offer Detroit service as originally reported. The last time Spirit served National it was also with two daily flights from Lauderdale, but one stopped in Melbourne, Florida in both directions. This is Sprit's second new route this winter, joning Lauderdale-Cancun service. This winter, Spirit will offer 22 daily departures from Ft. Lauderdale, including new 6th- and 7th-daily Lauderdale-LaGuardia services. Spirit also will continue to offer three dailies to Detroit, two each to Atlantic City, Chicago O'Hare, Denver, and San Juan, and a daily flight to Myrtle Beach.
Spirit is the second airline to launch FLL-DCA service this fall, joining airTran's new daily service, and the third in less than a year. USAirways offers thrice-daily service on the FLL-DCA route, and Delta Connection offers daily service.
Washington, D.C. is one of Miami's biggest domestic O&D markets, and the winter schedule looks like this:
MIA-IAD: 3x UA, 2x AA
MIA-DCA: 8x AA
MIA-BWI: 3x AA, 1x FL

These new flights come from slots that Spirit won in the recent slot lottery. They received 4 slots. However, all four slots are in the 2100 hour, which technically means both FLL flights must arrive and depart within that one hour time period...not the best schedule in the world.
However, Spirit may petition the DOT to have the slots moved to another time period.
Airtran's still has their DCA-FLL slots and recently announced that they too will begin using them in October.
