It's very much like flying on Qantas, except the crew are friendly. They're my first choice for my SYD trips which are now getting less frequent. Haven't flown the 744 yet, but they've configured these aircraft with economy class on the upper deck.

Haven't flown them ex LAX, but have flown them on a number of occasions. Service is good, seats are good, and they are reliable with a good safety record. The 747-400s came from Singapore Airlines, and (I think) are the ones used by Ansett for international services. Qantas is a major shareholder.

I flew on them from LAX-NAN-LAX. I wouldn't do it again, unless I had to. The crew was quite rude. My other half didn't want to have dinner, as it was so late. The flight attendant could not understand why and kept badgering him. On the return leg, the flight attendant kept insisting that I move my seat to its upright position so that the person behind me could eat. Of course, the person in front of me had his seat reclined, and the flight attendant seemed put off when I asked the same thing of him.
The food was OK. The plane did have decent leg room for coach. There are also so few options for making it Fiji, a place that I loved, that I would fly them again if it was necessary to go back. But given the choice, I'd take someone else.
