As mentioned earlier, SriLankan Airlines will definitively get two additional Airbus A340, the two A340 should arrive mid of October and service will commence at 01 November 2003. It looks like both 340 are ex SQ.

UL will increase flights into LHR, FRA, CDG and ZRH. UL might also increase flights to DXB, DEL and MLE.

Beside that, SriLankan Airlines Cargo will operate a dedicated freighter service to BOM.

Good to hear that it's going to be as early as mid October for the A340's arrival.

Are these ex SQ planes in storage at present, or still in service?

IMHO, they need to expand their A320 fleet also to cope with the additional frequencies planned for DEL, BOM etc as demand increases.

On another point, the Indian Govt has given an aid of Rs 300 million (£4.2m) to develop the Palaly (Jaffna) airport facilities, so we might see UL flying the domestic sectors too in the near future

They will become 4R-ALE and 4R-ALF I guess?

Glad to see they are doing good... I read a lot of good things and positive feedback about UL.

Sabena690,

I think you meant 4R-ADE & 4R-ADF  Smile,

Yes my guess is also the same, as 4R-ADD was destroyed in the attack on the airport in 2001 and unlikely they will use that again!

I confused with the A332 I guess...

One of the reasons for the new A 343s is that its BAHRAIN flights are being upgraded to twice weekly 312 seater A 343s from 260 seater A 332s.

Secondly, LHR is definitely getting extra flights in time for the peak DEC-JAN holiday season and FRA too. I heard that the extra LHR flights will be via MALE as its a very popular tourist spot for the Europeans and UL is its national carrier (of the Maldives too). It flies MLE-NRT too!

They want to increase flights to all Indian destinations but cant as they have crossed their limit unless a new round of talks take place.

Middle East destinations such as DXB-AUH-KWI are in the works too for additional flights.

Swissgabe, will they resume services to Jakarta? Your mentioned sometime ago, that this was no likely, but I was thinking, with these additional A340s, maybe a few A330s would be freed up. It is interesting to note, on the Singapore Airport timetables (August/July edition), UL's Jakarta flights are still listed....

Hi,
as of last week's Flight Int'l. the additional SriLankan A340s will not be ex-SQ planes!
But where else are secondhand A340 available, perhaps ex AirLib's A340s?

Jan

They are ALREADY flying to JKT 2 or 3 times a week.

Ex'AirLib A340 are now with Air Tahiti Nui and new starting "Air Bourbon", based at Reunion Island (RUN) in the Indian Ocean, but there must be one or two a/c left , still parked at Paris-ORY.

I flew Sri Lankan Last March on CDG-MLE, and MLE-CMB-CDG A332 and A340. I enjoyed it very much. Economy class is great, with comfortable seats, large pitch, PTV, nice and efficient crew, and excellent food.
The seats are not the best in Business, rather narrow compared to other airlines, but the service on board and Entertainement programm are perfect.

I hope these new a/c will permitt them to offer a nonstop service also on the way back MLE-CDG, as for the moment, it's only available in the CDG-MLE way... that's quite strange ! First time I was seeing a flight with "no return"...

SriLankan Airlines DOESN't put extra flights to any other European destination as scheduled flights. If aircrafts are available, they can be chartered.

Flights on CMB-DXB-KWI are now daily.

SriLankan Airbus A332 doesn't have 260 seats, it has Y 251 and J 30 giving a total of 281.

Regarding the LHR flights, as far as I know they are ONLY LHR-MLE non-stop and the MLE-CMB/CMB-LHR will remain.

Zizou
It looks like JKT will be offlined with eff. of the new Winter Schedule and as far as I know, there are no plans to restart it in the short term.

JMO-777
The latest status I have is, that the two A340 are ex-SQ.

FLYSSC
There are plans to introduce a new J Class. There are not many airlines offering a 2/2/2 seating in J class.

FLYSSC,

The reason originally for flying non-stop to MLE was after the attack on CMB airport in 2001, holidaymakers to MLE were afraid to transit via CMB, hence they started flying non-stop to MLE from LHR, CDG & NRT.

Now that the situation is calm, they are only doing so on the way out and returning passengers will have to transit through CMB on their way back to Europe.

In fact is the reason, that fuel prices are around 1/3 higher in MLE than CMB. But of course the government which still owns the main stake in SriLankan Airlines would like to push tourism in Sri Lanka it self.

SWISSGABE, most of the Airlines operating A330/A340 have a 2/2/2 seating in J class...if not ALL the airlines.

Thanks for all these precision. I'll will definately fly UL for my next trip to MLE next november, with or without the stop in CMB....!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

EK has lots of gold on its airplane but their 330 have a 2/3/2 config. If not mistaken, TG and MH have as well. Not sure about KE and others. LX has 2/2/2.

Gerardo
Don't know about this one. It hasn't been mentioned in the details of getting two additional 343.

Sure, UL is the best choice to MLE from CDG, ZRH, FRA and LHR.

Mmmm, kind of novel to find this level of interest in UL on a.net...maybe some members are familiar with the isle of serendipity  Big grin

It's great to have seen UL improve so greatly since the days when they had a bad reputation amongst expatriate locals in CMB...those were the days of the old Airlanka, arbitrary cancellation of flights and/or huge delays and Tristars that went tech frequently.....oh, and air conditioning failures at Bandaranike Int'l...  Insane = no surprise!  Big grin

Does anyone remember the "Business Class lounge" for non-UL passengers?....  Laugh out loud

I don't know what the Emirates people did, but they've done a great job so far! Similar to the Kenya Airways revolution in service....

Go UL!!

Here are some quotes from an article I found today:

DOHA: The Doha station of SriLankan Airlines recorded an eight per cent increase over its targetted growth for the year 2002-2003, a senior official said yesterday. The Sri Lankan flag carrier is also considering the addition of one more flight between Doha and Colombo, he added.

He said the demand for more seats in this sector already exists. "However, we need extra aircraft for these operations. If we launch the fourth flight, it will come only next summer," he said.

The airline will be acquiring two new Airbus A-340-200 wide-bodied, long-haul aircraft later this year.

"The induction of these aircraft will enable us to increase our London flights to 11 per week, Frankfurt to three per week, four flights to Paris and extra capacity between Colombo and Zurich," Rajapakse added.

The mention of the A340-200 is interesting but it could always be a typo. The article also mentions that they want to increase flights to doha to 4x weekly but those could only happen next summer because of aircraft availability, does this mean that they are getting even more aircraft?

Now you're talking.  Wink/being sarcastic

It's all a far cry from the facilities of today, there are three lounges now Peacock, Anthurium and Lotus , all got good facilities but sadly no views of the airfield (actually none of them have any windows at all!)  Sad.

BTW, I wouldn't go so far as to say it was all due to Emirates influence (although that has to take some credit for it) , but ever since the Govt. stopped meddling with the proper running of UL, it has been going from strength to strength.

Qatar, that news is amazing. SriLankan wants to do 4 weekly DOH-CMB and if I am not mistaken, Qatar flies between DOH-CMB 10 weekly. Which leads me to the question, why is such a big demand in flights between these two cities. Is it to do with the Labor traffic?

You think UL is only what they are because of EK? Do a search and find some other topics where this has been discussed earlier. Not everything seems to be GOLD.

QatarAirways / Zizou
Interesting article. Guess traffic between DOH and CMB must be mainly labor traffic and QR might get some European traffic as well.
Anyway, I think the traffic between Sri Lanka and the Middle East is getting more important and there is a hugh demand.

Well see a lot of traffic between Sri Lanka and the Middle East is mainly labour 65% I would guess whilst the rest is connecting traffic to USA-CAN-AFRICA AND EUROPE.

Kuwait Airways does well from IND-PAK-BANG AND SRL because of the convienience it offers its pax for USA and Europe flights + plus easy 1-3 hr connections at KWI airport.

Also QR is going 10 weekly to MALE, MALDIVES making it the 2nd largest carrier behind Sri Lankan!

Royal Jordanian however doesnt have a lot of the Indian subcontinent labour traffic to Amman and it mainly survives on excellent connections from the Indian subcontinent to LHR, JFK-ORD-DTW, CDG and FRA.
