On a related note, does Ethiopian still fly Delhi - Beijing or Bombay - Beijing?
That must be one of the most odd ball route for any airline. Addis Ababa - India - China! Any idea who uses that? I remember reading a travelogue from a German who flew from Delhi to China and back using Ethiopian and he mentioned flight was full both ways.
With twice weekly ops I would think crew stays in India for weeks before they return to base!

Sorry Chief! Born into this forum only on 29JUL... and too lazy to go back and do a search!! LMAO @ vimanav.
But seriously, Trade between the two Nations has increased tremendously. I read an article by Arun Shourie in the Express on 15th Aug where he stated that the trade imbalance between China and India had now tilted, and the deficit now closing in, from 5 years ago when indian babus were screaming- "chinese batteries, toys, clothes, etc" .
They apparently project a quantum leap in Air Passenger traffic when the promised marriage between Chinese Hardware Makers and Indian Software genies takes place- besides the regular toys, plastics and stuff.
But I do feel its still largely a Political route.- India via Bangkok to shanghai.

Vimanav,
Is there a lot of revenue between India and China?
AI must have done a lot of research to see if this flight would be good for AI!
As of now it is still more of a political rather than a purely economic decision. However efforts are on to bring the two regional giants closer. The Confederation of Indian Industry which is the foremost body of Indian companies and corporates are organizing a massive promotion in SHA in OCT03. Meantime India Tourism has announced its decision to open an office in China and their Chinese counterparts are in turn expected to open one in DEL shortly. India and China also recently signed an MoU recently whereby India would be accorded a special status aimed at bringing trade between the two nations closer. While trade exchanges have been limited, the DoT has been trying to organize a series of roadshows showcasing India in various Chinese cities.
China Eastern already operates 2/7 into DEL (even though the loads are still really to pick up).
Does Air India have traffic rights between China and Thailand?
I am given to understand that they do. This looks like a quid-pro-quo as TG has been granted traffic rights on the highly coveted MAA-DXB-MAA sector.
