QF's chief said toady that Qantas is well advanced on its plans to start a new low cost domestic airline to compete at the budget end of the market against the Virgin.
It will be completely stand alone and separate from QF.
This will also have the effect of blocking out SIA!.

I don't think it will work. There's no room in Australia for 2 budget airlines. QANTAS already have 1 subsidiary- Australian Airlines, why do they need another?

Yes: free beers on Citiflyer after 16:00 - and only weekdays
I really embarassed myself a couple of weeks back, flying on a Sunday evening instead of during the week...the trolley comes around offering drinks...I ask for a beer and am asked for $5.00...there's an suspenseful moment while I think and realise I have to pay for it today....shuffling of trolley while I go through the bin to retrieve my wallet.
Capital City flights at weekends are listed as Citiflyer, in reality they have none of the conveniences of true Citiflyer flights eg they rarely (in my experience) use the dedicated Citiflyer gates at weekends.

Because they are now feeling the intense pressure from Virgin, and have to do something about it. We can't just expect Qantas to sit there while DJ sucks up an increasing share of what Qantas previously considered to be their market for the taking.
The only way they are going to be able to compete effectively is if they set up something completely now, and pay staff peanuts (well, they wouldn't be paying them QF wages).
