A question was asked why UA and AA didn't buy any 764's, I wonder why any airline would buy 764's over 772's. Don't get me wrong, I love the 767 series. The 2-3-2 seating is in my opinion the best seating arrangement.
But DL, for exampe, has 763's and 772's, so why the 764? Seems to me to make more sense to buy the somewhat larger, newer ground-up designed, longer range and not that much more expensive 777.
Any thoughts?

Delta basically told Boeing what it wanted in a replacement for it's L-1011s, and that's what Boeing built for them. It has relatively low development costs, and was a great economical replacement for it's high density domestic markets. (ATL-MCO, ATL-LAX). Delta's 764s seat more than their 772s.

The 764 is also far, far lighter and fits into DL's domestic useage on fairly short routes quite well. There's no need to lift an airframe that can handle enough fuel for 8000 miles if you're only going 2,000 or 2,500! Not to mention it had a capacity in line with the old L1011's.

Despite what many will tell you on here, the 764 is a fantastic plane. It is efficient, it is comfortable and it is a perfect niche plane for CO/DL. I love flying on it, and the pilots seem to like flying it. It has some deficiences compared to the A330, but all planes have some deficiences to their immediate counterparts. I believe the A330 is too much plane for what DL/CO use the 764 for.
The main drawbacks for the 764 is it's cargo space and it's inability to take the large LD containers, its range is fine for what CO/DL use it for, although I have heard a few pilots say that it is just a little too much plane for the wing
