The only time I was on a L1011 was when I was since years old. I was a Delta flight from DFW to LAX. Sadly a L1011 crash a few week later on the Fort Lauderdale-DFW leg of the same flight but back to the topic. If any body who be has on a L1011 and can remember the detail of the flight, I would to know if the rumble from those RB 211 herd as good in the cabin, as it is out side. Is it well padded so you can not hear the start up that much. I herd the L1011 has a real smooth landing. Is it cabin like a DC10, a plane I flown on a lot. How the take off feel. From what I remember the cabin shaking during take off and this was when L1011 were not that old.

I flew on a BWIA L1011 before they were replace with A340-300's on BW900/01. I can't really remember much, though i remember the cabin was very big (heightwise). The seats were leather and the landing wasn't smooth at all (maybe because it was pouring down with rain in both BGI and LHR when we landed). When taxiing the engines were very loud, mainly because at the back you have one basically right over you. That's all i can remember

I've flown 10 TriStar segments. 8 with DL, 2 with TZ. Half the DLs were L15s, the others were the big L10s. A wonderful aircraft to fly, smooth comfy, can't beat a TriStar.

I've flown several times on the L1011, from Eastern, Pan Am and Delta.
One strange thing I noticed on a couple of occasions especially on my last L1011 flight back in '98 was the very smokey start ups especially on cold mornings, we were flying from ATL-MCO on DL in Feburary of that year.
During the start up the rear of the plane outside was engulfed in the smoky exaust from the rear (#2?) engine, it even made the cabin of the plane reak of engine exuast which was kind of disturbing. Don't get me wrong I love the smell of jet fuel, but the exuast smell was a little overwhelming.
Other than that the L1011 was/is a great aircraft, very big on the inside.

I flew the L1011 first time in 1980 with Gulf Air and in 1989 with TWA. About TWA at that time I was quite disapointed because I went in a business tour around USA and wanted to try diferent US airlines, but the price rulled and TWA gave me the best one. I flew these following routes:
All I can say is that the plane was very good, very stable and very confortable. The TWA ones were getting old at that time but they flew great. One thing I can't forget was when it started you could always hear a "whooooo". The tgake-offs were very powerfull and that lovely noise of those big RRoyces were unique. The wing of the plane was quite massive too, it gave I think a great sense of stability. Now that the L1011 is getting rarer I'm glad I actually flew in it a few times and I enjoyed! I live in Fresno now and until a few months ago I could track over FAT once a while a L1011-500 from ATA, I don't know if they still fly it but it was nice to see it!

My primary memory is of the rudimentary flight-tracking system that would get projected onto the bulkhead wall screen. I was on a flight that was diverted and then circled for over an hour, so the flight track was a nasty reminder of a very annoying flight.

I flew EA L-1011's many times over the years and PA's 500 series a couple of times. The cabin was not as quiet as the DC10's although the ride was smooth. For some reason they felt rather "military" and spartan although very safe. Landing and takeoff elicited multiple cabin rattles and the landing gear was less sprung than the DC10 and, yes, the RB211's smoked on start-up, mostly in cold weather. All in all one of my favorite aircraft.

I've flown the L10 many times and find it to have one of the most sturdy/solid feels of any aircraft. The rear lav area was louder than normal because of the #2 engine but everything forward of the wing was very pleasant. The noise in the rear of the a/c wasn't objectionable, however.
The worst jet turbulence I ever experienced was on a Delta L15 from SEL-PDX; we hit rough stuff for about an hour over Japan. I was in business class over the wing and got to watch the big RR pitching up and down on the wing. I'm sure part of the reason we experienced the turbulence was because the L15 couldn't climb above it that early in a flight that long. The reward was watching the twinking lights of ships in the Pacific Ocean halfway through the flight in the middle of the night with the red anti-collision light reflecting off the engine. I felt very secure knowing that this jet had endured such a long period of turbulence and had handled it quite well. Quite a memorable night.

I have rode the Tri-Star twice.
1st was with Delta, a 500, from HNL to LAS and back. It was a comfortable ride. Not much to say about 2-5-2 seating, but there was some leg room. It felt and looked like a wide-body inside. Tri-Stars were synonmous with DL at HNL. Sad to see they are gone.
2nd was with Rich International for the same destination. However, there was a huge difference. Cattle car seating, hardly any leg room. Very stuffy. Night and day from DL.

I have flown on the TriStars several times on BWIA and once on EA - my BW sectors have been of various lengths and include 7 between POS and LHR. The plane is very smooth but prone to shake on power-up and take-off roll (I remember this from my last few flights by which time the planes were quite old) and cruises with a discernible nose-up attitude. The cabin is very quiet. On occasion the a/c would drip condensate on passengers sitting below the outlets - that may also be an effect of the planes' ages.
Overall a very good ride and so try to get a flight or two before they all disappear.

I flew them a lot from 1985 onwards with British Airways on their route to Kuala Lumpur. They were great to fly on as they were much more comfortable than the cramped 747s that were flying at the time. We always used to get the first few seats in Economy Class (as my family worked with BA at the time) and these seats were the old BA Super Club 'Convertor' seats which could be switched easily by pulling down the large centre armrest (in a set of 3 seats) when the plane wasn't full - so you got Super Club comfort for most if not the entire journey. These seats were only situated at the front of the Economy cabin. There was also a tiny rear cabin (as BA operated the Series 200 and I gather series 250 (tweeked for performance) to KUL) in Economy which was great and cosy but this was often the smoking section (ahh those were the days of recycled smokey cabin air!). I used to love the five rear toilets laid out in a semi-circle and remember thinking - that was such a design feature of the L1011!
We also thought that it was often easier to see the screen on the Tristar than on the 747 which in those days was a bonus.
The only thing about the TriStar was that we stopped usually twice en-route to refuel or pick-up/let down passengers. After some time, BA reintroduced the one-stop service to compete with Malaysian at the time (and this flight carried on to Manila). The service soon reverted back to the 747 equipment in the early 1990s.
Take off was superb on the L1011 and as someone else mentioned performance I gather was supreme. I was however quite sick once as we circled in to land on a stormy Kuala Lumpur December day... although we glided smoothly, I was SO amazed with the flaps action (oh that's right - I seem to remember that they were always extended one by one on either side and they made a loud whirring noise as they rolled out) and the scenery outside with the storm clouds darkening the cabin - that I lost it and threw up all over - my brother - huh
Ahh I miss the TriStars...we often parked next to the giant SQ, CX, QF, TG, MH 747s flying between Asia and Europe and even next to BA 747s - whenever we refuelled in the Mid-east (usually at 2am local time) but I always felt special to be a passenger on THAT little one which looked so much cuter and cooler than the Jumbos. I will always remember a passenger who joined our flight at Bangkok during a stopover and she exclaimed, "That tiny thing is NOT going to take us all the way to London, is it?", as she arrived at the boarding gate - but it sure did and it did it in STYLE!!!
I also flew with Cathay Pacific Tristars although I remember their cabin was very different. On my first flight in the 1980s, there were very small overhead lockers above the windows but nothing else. They had large pockets to put magazines and stuff between seats in the centre section but otherwise the cabin was open. They also had great plastic 'things' (can't really describe them) but guess they were there to 'break up' the cabin atmosphere. The seats were also lurid - green and yellow and mauve - I seem to remember.

I flew on the L-1011 many times, all of them Eastern or Delta machines. It was a very pleasant airplane to fly in, except for the engine noise towards the rear of the cabin from the center engine. Good climb performance and very smooth under most conditions. Never had any kind of a problem in them.
The first few times I flew on Eastern's L-1011s they had only 8 seats (2-4-2) across in economy with a small coat hanging compartment in the center. They were very comfortable and I sure hated it when they went to 9 across!

It was the last departure of the day for Atlanta. It was a quite night flight to Atlanta. It was also my first transit to the "NEW" Atlanta airport. In April 1991 I flew from STL to PHL on a TWA L-1011. The plane was rather nice for it's age and the crew was excellent. I do miss TWA! My final L-1011 trip was in January 1998. I picked up Delta's Flight 15 at DFW after it arrived from Honolulu and flew it to Atlanta. This was my first flight that feature the moving airplane map video. It was great to see our position and look out the window to confirm our position.

I have flown so many its rediculous with DL(fathers a pilot their) and with my company(ATA). I am not a big fan of the 500 but the 1/100 wins my heart all the time, nothing beats the rumble/sound of the 22B from its unique start up sound to its famous taxi moo to the Full power Deluxe moo when you apply power. It flies smoother than any other aircraft I have flown on, but the 100's can be a dog on an loaded takeoff. I have been on several loaded 100's that require damn near the whole 11,000 ft a loaded 100 takes to get off amazing! Trintocan that condensation drip is not due to its age, that just happens sometimes due to several factors. I was on a 3 year old DL 777 that this recently.

EXFatboy when its loaded the 100 that is it is a dog it lumbers down the runway seeming as if it wasnt gaining alot of speed and climbs really slow. I timed one takeoff at 61 sec one time from LAS to HNL one day and it wasnt even hot! Some of the Military charters in Baltimore are using the 100's and I know they are dogs.

The flights were absolutely very smooth but personally, I did not like the interiors. Too much like a hollow tube, just a large "thing" filled with seats.

The aircraft was very smooth and from what I recall quite, first impression upon entering the arcraft was the inmmense size of the cabin and the loud colors DL had on it's seats.

I have been on 52 L-1011 flights, mostly on Eastern and Delta, with one on TWA. When I first flew on them, seating was 2-4-2. When I first flew on one with a 2-5-2 configuration, I asked the flight attendant on my Eastern flight if they had gotten that plane from another airline and hadn't changed the interior yet. She said no, that Eastern was configuring a few that way. On my return trip, I had a 2-4-2 version, so I thought maybe she was right. I never had a 2-4-2 model again. I asked a ramp agent in ATL why they were doing this. He said they had just bought a lot of A300s, and they needed to pay for them. With more seats, they would make more money.
The L-1011 has been my favorite jet aircraft. I really liked the ones with no center overhead bins. They just looked nicer inside. Landings were extremely smooth. I was amazed at the smooth landing on the short runway at Maui on a Delta aircraft. I'm surprised they never over-ran the runway, but the L-1011 was able to handle it day in and day out.
