This after noon I notice there was more United 747 than normal. One was coming from over the pacific and landed on runway 24. It could not be coming from NRT because the 777 that operated that flight came in on time and it could be flight 816 from SYD because it was on time. Then later another United 747 come in on runway 25. Is United starting to fly more transpacific routes from LAX or those training flights. I know they did not come from IAD or ORD so if anybody know why United has this extra 747s land at LAX please tell me thanks you.

There were reports that UA had parked a lot of their 744s in desert instead of performing D checks for maintenance. There are also reports floating around that Thai international airways could be buying 7 or 8 of these babies from UA still. LAX could be where they are getting maintenance or where Thai might be picking them up.

United Airlines uses 2 or 3 744s for ORD-LAX (flt 109, 816, etc), DEN-LAX, and a few times I've seen SFO-LAX. Other than that, the main 744 use is the SYD flight at LAX... everything else has been downgraded to a 772 including NRT, LHR, etc.
Also, if you look away from the United terminalsto the east, you'll see the actual UA cargo area with a lot of United Express. There, you'll see where they hold the 744s for other uses and leave the emergency exit doors open to get some fresh air.

UAL has very successfully renegotiated their leases on 744's, and combined with the new CBA's that took effect 5/1 of this year, it's now much cheaper for them to operate the 744's on domestic routes, and they are doing exactly that. Conversely, they weren't able to renegotiate leases on the newer 772's, so some of those aircraft are headed for the desert. I know they fly IAD-SFO and IAD-LAX, as I saw those flights depart IAD last week. Flights to SYD of course (815/816) are 744's, that hasn't changed. I could be wrong on this, but I thought the planes had already been delivered to Thai.
It was just announced today that UAL is restoring their full transpacific schedule effective Sept. 1st I believe, especially to HKG, so you'll start seeing even more! And yes...ON TIME! UA has done an excellent job as of late in getting their flights in on time or early. As posted in another thread, in June they tied with JetBlue with 84.4% of their flights on time.

Flightview.com lists UA 102 (LAX-ORD) as being operated by a 747-400 today (8/27/03) instead of the scheduled two-class 767-300. If that was indeed the case, then I know a person with a First Class ticket who had a very pleasent surprise today!
