Gimli Glider

Obviously the plane did leave Gimli after its unfortunate but luckily safe emergency landing. Does anyone have any info on what work was needed to be done and how they got the plane airborne again off such an old and maybe short runway.

I think they just fixed it there and had the parts shipped. Looking at the pictues, it was mostly gear repair and i believe the aircraft is still in operation today, i have seen it in and out of YYZ in the past year or so...i think that would be a great aircraft for a museum!

I think Air Canada has retired the Gimli Glider from commercial service, as well as a large portion of their 767-200 fleet. But yeah, it should totally be put in a museum.

I know that Gimli is 604...right....i have saw 616 and 618 the other night...i know that they are old as well so i think they have a few older ones flying....I am not surprised the old girl is resting she has had a hard life and lots of hours!

Actually guys, the Gimli Glider is still flying the friendly skies.
Fin 604 has been here to YYT many times over the summer. I have had the privledge of working her quite a few times. Come to think of it, I have worked her and pushed her back for departure at least twice in the last in the last week or so.
Also, our first 767, fin 201 is still flying as well. A lot of the veteran 767's have been in YYT over the summer months.
Good to see them still flying.

AC_B777, you're probably referring to 601, right??

Actually, the oldest 767-200's (601,602) will probably still be around for a while (although there is no telling what will happen...) since they have recently undergone H02 checks.

I'd never heard of the 'Gimli Glider' incident before - so I've just read an excellent article about the whole episode and I'm completely amazed, I spent most of the article saying 'Oh my God'!

Just goes to show that with all of these modern computers and flight control systems, if all goes wrong, a well trained person can still land 132 tonnes of metal with his bare hands and a very co-operative co-pilot.

There is a novel called Freefall, by William and Marilyn Mona Hoffer that examines the Gimli Glider incident in depth. It's easy to read because it puts more of a human and less of a journalistic spin on the events. Definitely recommended reading!

The only damage to C-GAUN was to the nose-wheel area besides some scraping of the engine cowls.

While it would be interesting to know which glided a longer distance - the Air Canada 762 or the Air Transat 330, just for info there was also the BA 742 and KL 744 both of which had engines flaming out for some time due to volcanic ash ingestion and glided some distance as well. Fortunately in both instances the engines were restarted and they both made it safely to terra firma.

The story of the Gimli Glider is also recounted in the book "Emergency - Crisis on the Flight Deck" by Stanley Stewart. Its a good read as well.

I am almost certain the TS A330, something like 140-160nm I believe. A 767 would never make it that far from cruise level, more like 120nm.

You are right, "Freefall" is indeed a great book to read about this incident.
I got it as a Christmas gift when it was first released, and I have read it many times over the years.
I have seen this book on eBay many times for a good price.
Definitely worth the read.

I did hear that most of the interior was taken out prior to the a/c's departure from Gimli.
I'm not sure what exactly was removed, but I would say all the seats were and maybe some parts of the galleys and bulkheads.
Incidently, my wife is flying on the "Glider" as I write this post. She is on her way to YYZ on AC639.

There was a small fire which erupted in the front wheel well, but members of The Winnipeg Sports Car Club which were using the strip at the time, converged on the aircraft and quickly doused the small fire with portable extinguishers.

Side note: Folklore (If you want to call it that) claims that the group of AC mechanics who set off from Winnipeg (YWG) in their panel van to begin assessment and repairs "RAN OUT OF GAS" somewhere in the backwoods of Manitoba!

According to Canada Flight Supplement, dated 14 September 1995, the runway at The Gimli Industrial Park is 6800 feet X 150 feet asphalt. Well within an empty ferry flight SOP.

The facilty, operated by Manitoba Government Services is active as a paragliding (go figure), parachuting and CF Hercules touch & go aerodrome.

Not sure if The Winnipeg Sports Car Club has ever gone back, but on the walls of some homes in Winnipeg are no doubt the best pictures of the incident... Now if we can only get one in the Airliners data base!
