Boeing 377 Stratocruiser.

Are there any 377 stratocuiser in the world. If so are there plans to restore them. Do any body know.

Currently the only one I think is still preserved is from IAF ( Israeli Air Force ). Otherwise no Boeing 377 are around, but we still can find some C-97's around, I know at least one is preserved and in airworthy condition.

There are still a few more ex-military examples sitting at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tuscon, if I recall.

There is/was an example of the Boeing 307 Stratocruiser that was restored by ex-Boeing employees some years ago;

Sadly, this example crashed into Puget Sound on one of its first flights, but was recovered and is awaiting repair.....

The 307 referred to above will never fly again. It HAS been restored, flown to Oshkosh and has made its final flight to IAD, where it will be displayed in the new Air & Space Museum Annex.

The Israeli 377s are long gone. There is not a single true 377 left in the world.

The NASA Super Guppy at the Pima Air Museum carries the msn from a 377 but that's about it.



Is grammar no longer taught is schools? Saying "me and her" or some such implies illiteracy.

I'm sorry that no Boeing 377 Stratocruisers have been saved.  Sad Even though Boeing didn't sell that many 377's they were important in establishing international routes from 1950 on. NW used them on flights to TYO, and Pan Am used them to establish transatlantic routes.

Your examples are for the 307 Stratoliner. The question was about the 377 Stratocruiser which is a different aircraft.

The aforementioned Boeing Model 307 was officially called Stratoliner (PAA dubbed theirs Strato Clippers). The prototype S-307 was an all-new pressurized cylindrical fuselage mated to B-17C (Model 299H) wings, engines and tail. Subsequent production SA-307B Stratoliners used the B-17G tail with dorsal fin, slotted wings, etc.

Boeing took the same steps in developing the C-97/377 Stratocruiser; IE: mating a new double-bubble fuselage to B-29 wings, tail, etc. I believe previous posters are correct; there are no true passenger 377s left. Interestingly, Boeing proposed a wealth of upgrades for the Strat, including a swept/tail wing variant using B-47 surfaces, stretches of fuselage and wingspan, turboprops (there were a couple of military turboprop C-97s built that were quite cool) and even a gull wing design. Many have conjectured that these proposals were a "smokescreen" to disguise the real secret project of the time, what we all know as the 707...Jack

Hawkins & Powers has a fleet of ex USAF C-97's at their base in Greybull, MT and has one set up as a forest fire tanker (Tanker 97), I don't know if it is still being used. The others were supposed to be converted to tankers but the last I heard they are just sitting at the airport.

The Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation as a C-97G in flying condition. It is based at Floyd Bennett Airfield adjacent to JFK and it is being set up to tour the country in a remembrance of the Berlin Airlift.

These are the only 2 flyable C-97's left.

I believe the Israeli Air Force models were C-97's that were converted to swing tails for the IAF

The C-97 and the 337 are basically the same aircraft and if someone who can afford it, like Boeing and convert a C-97 to a 337 for display purposes at the Museum of Flight.

This would fill in the gap between the 307 and the dash 80 707 which are now both on display as to Boeing's evaluation in pressurerized airliners

Tanker 97 was definately flying out of Ft Wainwright last year, I saw it dropping on a live fire.

This year I am pretty sure it was doing the same thing, even more so since because of that A-hole Jim Hall and his investigation of the PB4Y and C-130 forestry crashes got it's stablemate Tanker 127 grounded.

I saw one at King Salmon about 4 years ago. Was there one still flying fish back then.

It wasn't a derilect or anything like that. It wasn't there the last time I flew through in 1997 and it wasn't there the next time I was there about two years the other side.

Wrecks in Bush Alaska tend to hang around for a while.

Someone here said that the Boeing 377 is long gonne, I possitively sure that at least one of the civil Boeing 377 ( not the C-97 ) is preserved in Israel, not flying but preserved! Did you check out that homepage that Goose showed? I see clearly in there that they preserved the airplane.

In 1963, five model 377’s Stratocruisers c/n’s 15925 (N1025V), 15930 (N1030V), 15962 (N90946), 15963 (N90947) and 15964 (N90948) were obtained from Pan American and rebuilt by Bedek Aviation for the Israeli Air Force.

Two had swing tails and cargo doors on the port side while the rest had side cargo doors and C-97 style tail sections with clamshell doors by and were designated B-377M’s.

Eight additional KC-97G’s and one KC-97F aircraft were subsequently obtained from the USAF between 1965-1973. All were retired by 1978.

The aircraft on display at the Israeli Air Force Museum is C-97G, ex USAF 52-2799, c/n 16830.

None of the former Pan Am 377’s survive.

Infact after I went to Israeli Air Force Museum I admit I was wrong, there are two Boeing preserved but not the civil 377, there are both from the C-97 family, one is on display - 039/4X-FPN a KC-97G - and another one stored - 035/4X-FPO a C-97, so to clear this affair out the civil 377 is no longer in our world!

The last surviving civilian B377 was N74603 which was in Hamilton Aviation's compound at Tucson IAP until 1983 when its tail was cut off and later the entire aircraft was scrapped. The aircraft wore faded Aero Spacelines titles and had been sitting there for many years (first seen by myself in 1978 when it already looked pretty run down, though basically complete, including engines).
From what I heard then, the cutting off of the tail was accidental (wrong plane !). Does anyone know more about this ?

according to the site Goose mentioned it is 039 / 4X-FPY, named "Masada", which is on display.

I just checked out the Airliners.net photo engine and I'm sending you a photo of 4X-FPY/097, if you can see closely this particular airplane is infact a Boeing 377 with round windows, no weather radar and prop-cubes, the one in the Israeli Air Museum is 039/4X-FPN, you can check a photo and find out that the plane is indeed a C-97G.
I hope this clears out.

The last complete B377 (as opposed to the B367 - a.k.a. C-97) was, as Heinz stated, a Northwest example, N74603, which was broken up at Mojave in the early '80s to supply parts for the Aero Spacelines Super Guppy program.

Stephen Piercy's excellent book of that vintage has a splendid picture of the plane showing the aircraft in sad shape but basically intact (sans tail). What a pity she wasn't restored!

The examples at Pima and in New Jersey are Air Force C-97s.

I would also like to add a shameless plug for Nicholas Veronico's excellent Airliner Tech Series book on the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser. The book has individual histories of each airframe, along with splendid interior and exterior shots.

Wait now. Without checking my database, I think the Erickson Guppy also carries a 377 serial.
