Outside at MDW and ORD, where would be a good place to park the car and watch planes take off and/or land? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Eeww!
I hope these 'spots' aren't in your underwear!  Wow!

Just kidding! Big grin

MDW does allow closer access for spotting but ORD has a better variety of planes.  Smile

I can't remember any street names other than Mannheim Road with is on the east Perimeter of ORD. I was there last year and took Mannheim Road north to the road on ORD's north perimeter. There is a McDonalds on the northeast corner of this intersection and some office buildings and I think a motel on the northwest. Go left and go down about a half mile and the planes land right over the road at about 100 ft up. I was video taping planes there last summer. I got video tapes of an Alitalia 763, SAS 763, Brit Mid A330, Iberia A340, BA Union Jack 744, and several United and AA 763s and 772s. I was there while the Chicago Airshow was going on so I also got a C-5, KC-135 and a B1 B landing

HlywdCatft- I saw the KC135 last year land on 9R and the B1B land on 22R.

ORD has some GREAT spotting places you just have to know where to find them. First get a road map that also shows the runways that ORD has and you can start with that.

look at 4R-22L....there are a lot of cargo buildings there, your about 100ft from that RW. Not alot of Heavys come in on this runway but it stays pretty busy.

9R-27L there are a few good spotting places, like HlywdCatft said on Mannheim Road there are a few good places to stop and watch planes come in. Sometimes on about 100-200FT AGL.......omg the rush you get is awsome when a 777/747/A340 comes buzzing over you.

Check out where FedEx/UPS cargo buildings are. If you fallow the road around (you have to turn off of Irving park rd. A.K.A. IL19) you will come to a dead end by the United or ANA cargo buildings and you can see 32R-14R very well as well as 27L-9R depending on the day and the pattern there working at that time of day you can see some great stuff.......ive seen a lot of go-arounds and pilots haveing to make s-turns alot when there using 27L and 27R for landings.....very awsome sight when a 747 does a manuver.

One off my favorite spots is on 14R approch, there is a road there i think its Busse road im not sure. But when the planes are landing on 14R there is a warehouse/metal fabricating building there and i sit in the parking lot....Most of the time there is a crosswind when the planes are coming in on that runway and its an AWSOME few seeing the heavys playin with the rudder over the #'s. That RW sees a lot of diversity as far as aircraft types/airlines. ORD is one of the best spotting places i know of because of the airplanes/airlines/ and spotting areas. I cant tell you where all of them are because i would have to show you.
