ive been wondering this for a while now, will there ever be any south american carriers in SFO? it would seem like Varig would go there, with SFO being the major star hub on the west coast, and lan chile could go there too. Avianca could be another, but theyre in too bad of financial shape to do anything right now

This may be a tad off topic, but I am comparing your interest in having S. American airlines in SFO similar to LAX like we in Edmonton are hoping some airlines (Such as our national carrier) will begin serving YEG on a similar footing as YYC. Our biggest problem is that Edmonton is a mere 200 miles north of Calgary, not unlike SFO is to LAX.

WHY FLY THAT EXTRA MILEAGE WHEN THEY CAN FLY TO YOU!

Sad, but true!

WHY HAVE 2 COMPANY ASSETS WITHIN A HOP?

SAD, but so true!

All I can remember was the CO DC-10 with the half VASP painted on one side here. Copa, I have to say that some of these smaller carriers you will not see, cause codesharing is everywhere. For Latin America airlines, due to geography, its esier for SFO pax to go through LAX,MIA,DFW, cause its not very our of the way. The poor economy is strapping most of the carriers. Vargi is losing planes quicker then getting them. Long time till you will see them realisticlly.

Hi!

When I moved to Fresno my first option was to fly to SFO with BA, finnally I ended flying LAX with SWISS. Eventually when my brother-in-law came to visit us he flew to SFO and we went to pick him up. I have to say that it was a very pleasant and neat surprise this airport. I always loved to see an airport close to the sea and there are some that look really great, but untill now I never seen one like SFO. I think SFO can stay with the size it as now, not too big, great access and nice for spotters. About the south american airlines and eventually other traffic comming, it looks like the "wave" is in southern California, tourist will come for the Disneyland, Universal Studios, etc. etc. People that flies to SFO will be more selective, you can't see a lot of international airlines flying both airports, from Europe you just have KL, BA, AF and LH, from Asia you have some more but we must to admit that there are many asians in this area and around, for example Fresno have a big community, so people will fly to SFO and drive a mere 3 hours, less than from LAX, finnally and because South America is not in such a good shape they tend to concentrate their californian market in one big airport and of course that is LAX. If we look to the airlines that could actually do something on that the only ones that COULD are LAN-CHILE and VARIG, Avianca and Aerolineas Argentinas are very weak and besides that what do we have? The other airlines from South America will also fly to MIA and JFK. I don't even know if any airline from Mexico is flying to SFO, are they? I saw a Mexicana in San Jose Airport, that was the closest I got from SFO.
Well just a small brain study.
Regards

SFO has no South American carriers because there is no demand from SFO to South America. Varig and Vasp used to fly into SFO in the early 1990s as a tag on from LAX. I actually saw 11 PAX get off that VASP flight. Varig was contemplating starting a flight from Sao Palo - SFO - HKG but it never materialized. The mayor of SF and a group went down to various countries in S. America two years ago to look for a few new flights but nothing ever developed. You will not see a S. American carrier at SFO any time soon.

The closest SFO will get to South American service is United's daily San Francisco-Sao Paulo flight that makes a stop in Miami. There is zero demand. Varig has thier Asian flights go via LAX, and going to SFO would make no sense. Avianca is in financial trouble, as you say, but they don't even serve LAX any more. There is virtually zero passenger demand to Santiago de Chile outside of the Miami area. MIA is the only one of LanChile's US destinations to have non-stops to SCL (LAX and JFK have LIM stops) and DL's ATL and AA's DFW flights rely mainly on cargo demand (which is very strong and makes SCL a very profitable market).

Maybe UA/RG could feed a 767 to GRU/GIG from its transpacific traffic at SFO? And isn't there a pretty big Brazilian pop in the bay area? I'll admit its unlikely, especially with the state of the East Asian and Brazilian economies . . . Would be cool though. SFO really needs some diversity of destinations away from Asian and transcontinental routes.

Copa-T 2 isn't even close to being done. They just started to work on it again 3 weeks ago. It will be Americans gates. They will gate 3 gates so it will have 13 gates. They may move another carrier in with them, I havent hear much lately. They are more concerned getting A concourse in T1 torn down.
