It has been a while since any new types of NWA aircraft have made their transitions to the new livery. Does anyone know about these planes?

747-200 (probably will never see, but it made it to the new seat map page)

DC-10-30 (hopes  Love)

RJ-85 (are any of these due before leases are up?)

Any info is appreciated. Thanks and happy spotting.

I hear that there is a DC-10-30 due for new paint either Sept. or Oct. Probably Industrial Pate knows for sure.

As there are many 742 freighters in NWA´s fleet (and a few pax-aircraft about to be converted) we´ll see a new scheme on them for sure.

I thought the freighters had their own dedicated livery, independent of the passenger jets' livery?

Yes, but based on the old mainline livery (old logo). So it will be changed for sure.

I thought it had been said that both the 742's and the DC10's would not be painted in the new CS. They will retire in the old CS. From a financial point of view it does not make a lot of sense to repaint them if they are do to retire soon..

The 742 freighter won´t be retired anytime soon. So they´ll get new colours. Some of the DC-10-30s will be around for a few years still (until the A330s have been delivered) so if one is due for a repaint it´ll get it.

Still there is no official statement on when the 742-pax-fleet will be retired. Hardly thinkable that this will happen this year still as rumoured as it would leave a huge gap in the fleet. And some of these about 15 Jumbos aren´t that old. There are many 757s older than the youngest 742s in NWA´s fleet (not to mention the granddaddy DC-9s that were built during the Vietnam war)

The DC9's will be around after the DC10's have been retired. Why put the cost into painting planes that will be shortly leaving your fleet, it is very costly to paint an aircraft and no airline has the extra money to repaint planes that are just going to retire soon. Also the freighter division has in the past had a separate color scheme than the pax planes.

NW Cargo has and had a different colourscheme, that´s true. But not a different or even old Logo and titles in the old style. At least the tails will have to be repainted and the titles updated. I hope they keep the bare metal look (altough the silver NW-freighters need better care, look at JAL´s JA8180 that is of the same age as the dirty NW N640US).

The DC10's and 747's are not being perminantly retired. They're being parked for long term storage. The 7 most low-time DC10's are supposed to remain in the fleet sometime until 2007/8, mostly for the HNL-mainland market. The 747-200's are being parked to save money. If demand calls for them to be brought back, they will. Which is looking more and more likely everyday. All of flights to NRT, KIX and NGO are going out full or very close to it. NW is looking to retire them, but with the uncertainty of the industy at this point, they looking to keep most of them operational until they are certain they can do away with them. But as usual, the bigwigs forcast up in Minnie are turning out to be wrong. The 1st DC10 scheduled to be repainted in the NC in October making an appearance in November.

Ship 5648 (a 757) left MSP for AMA last night to get painted. My father works in line matinance for NWA and says that we will see DC-10-30s in the new paint maybe as many as five of them. These A/C will, with the delivery of more A330's, be converted for use on the beach markets (single class). As for the 742's, this is a tricky question. I had heard last spring that they would probably be gone by the end of 2004, but that was in the middle of the SARS crisis in asia. The sechedule changes tomorrow and I'd be cerious to see how many 742's they park, if any. We may yet see a 742 in the new paint.

NW does not operate any single-class flights to anywhere. Some 742s operate NRT-GUM, NRT-SPN and maybe between HNL and Japan with a higher density seating configuration than Int'l 742s, but they are not single-class aircraft.

Yeah I was going to say NW does not operate any one class planes. What is this "beach market" that could be all of Florida, Mexico, Caribbean, Hawaii and the list is endless.

The Beach Market is known as the Hawaii-Japan market. I can't remember why. But it's all high density seating.. So probably half of A zone would be coach if it were on a DC10.

Is there any NWA 742 younger than 30 years old parked currently besides N622US that was wfu 2 or 3 months ago? Even 32 year old N613US ist still used for the military charter or as fleet backup as much as I know.

My bad, should have checked the seat maps before I sopke, I ment high density seating. I beleve that there are a few NWA 742's that they either took delivery of or aquired in the mid to late eighties, some were converted to freighters. Those were aquired from United and have only the side door. Same with some of the DC-10-30's, the newest one of those was certified in June of 1988. All, I believe, were aquired from Swiss or KLM. The only DC-10's NWA ever ordered were the -40's, which are all gone now. Don't remeber which -30 is the youngest, I'm looking for my fleet summary, and I cannot remember where I put it. I have not seen 6613 lately, must be abroad or at another station. She's usually parked out side of Hangar 7 at MSP, we call her the Hangar Queen.

19 out of the 30 747-200's NWA has were built in the 80's. 8 out of 12 freighter's and 11 out of 18 pax. The other 7 pax built in 1979. The last 5 pax -200's built in 1984-1986. Approximate average age of pax -200 is 20 years and the -200f's is 21 years old.

I wouldn't be surprised that some DC-10-30's and 747-200's belonging to NW get the new livery. Mostly because the D10's and 742's in NW service were among the last DC-10-30's and 747-200's built.

The 36 RJ-85's (F16/Y53) arrived new to the NW fleet in '98. I think we will see one in the new colors next year at the soonest. An aircraft I know that will have to be painted is the one that tangled with a jetbridge in MEM. The front section of this aircraft has to be removed to complete the fix. I am not sure why NW/XJ didnt total the aircraft.

AFAIK, They DID total the aircraft. N528XJ is not due to fly anymore unless somebody changed their minds.

br715, actually 528 is being repaired in MEM. Think it was about a month or two ago that in an employee newsletter that it will be fixed. Took them long enough to figure that out but they said it will fly again. And yes, it will need to be repainted. They all do. It's funny to see the paint chipping off of the front. One good thing about flying on them and having long jetbridges (atleast here in MSP for the ARJs) is that passengers don't see it that well.

528 was not written off - don't believe what those idiots at airdisaster.com tell you. They had the plane written off shortly after that day in October. XJ and NW are currently bickering and in disagreements as to who is responsible for painting the Avros. NW says painting is a maintenance issue and since XJ is responsible for the mx, XJ needs to pay for and paint them. XJ says the pain scheme was a marketing descison and since NW is responsible for marketing, NW should pay for them. Either way - they are starting to look awful and need painting badly. They'r enot even old - but they're looking that way. It's pretty embarasing. But XJ is having to retrofit the avros with new GPWS and a 1.5 million $$$ modification per airplane for an elevator dampener. Lots of $$$ to be spent, not to mention the cash it will take for the new pilot and mechanic contracts. Maybe they need to unload big sky and stop wasting XJ money for that bad investment.

Saw a 752 last night in DTW - looks sharp!

What about the baby-nines? I know those are the oldest, but aren't they the cutest!!?? I would love to see those repainted!

Also, aren't the leases on the RJs due up pretty soon? I thought I saw 2007 as the time, but I am unsure. I think the new colors look great on the smaller planes.  Smile
