SAA A340-600's To New York

ll the reservation systems have now updated to show that SAA will commence daily A346 flights to Atlanta on 1 Jan 2004 and daily A346 flights to New York from 9 Feb 2004, replacing the B747-400's that currently ply those routes.

Thus from Feb 2004 SAA will be using A346's on the following routes:
Daily to FRA
Daily to SA - SA - Georgia">ATL
Daily to SA - SA - New York">JFK
About 3x weekly to HKG

From Feb 2004, the B747-400's will operate exclusively on the SA-London route (2 daily JNB-LHR, 1 daily CPT-LHR). Thus there will only be a requirement for 6 aircraft. Seems that at least 1 or 2 B744 will be surplus to the airline from that point (possibly ZS-SBK/S????)

From October 1 2003, all South African Airways (SAA) flights will fly to New York via Dakar, Senegal.

Four of the seven flights will return non-stop to Johannesburg, with three of them stopping over in the West African city. The new schedule is in line with SAA’s Networking Africa strategy of creating African hubs and the increasing demand for seats from West Africa to New York and Johannesburg.

However, flights TO Atlanta will still stop-over in the Cape Verde island of Ilha do Sal. Return flights FROM Atlanta will be non-stop to Cape Town 3 times per week and Jo'burg 4 times per week (Except during certain seasonal times of the year when return flights will also route via Sal).

I kind of saw this coming because of the long distance of these routes and the ability of the A346 to fly them maybe a bit better than the 744 (please correct me if I'm wrong). I'm in ATL and it excites me and makes me sad at the same time. We'll be losing a beautiful plane (the SAA 744) and getting one that in my opinion does not look at good, but the A346 is an amazing aircraft, so I'm also excited to be getting one in ATL.

The 744 and the 346 don't have wildly differing ranges - but the 744 is limited by airworthiness directives to a certain amount of reserve fuel to cool the tanks and pumps.

Do they have 4 aircraft yet? Is 4 aircraft enough to serve all these routes at these frequencies?

I beleive that South African Airways already got rid of its last 747-SP and is now retirering its last 747-200B aircraft, the 400's will be assigned on the SA-UK daily flights like you say but do you know on what routes the older 300's are assigned? I'm just curious to know where I could fly one last time on a Classic 747 with SAA. They still have 747-300's don't they? I think they are currently flown on the SA-LHR and JNB-FRA routes, and maybe JNB-ZHR. The 300's won't be around much longer, I would say two more years at the most but the 400's will continue to fly for a while, probably till the end of the decade.
There are currently 8 747-400's at SAA, that's more than enough if they plan on assigning that aircraft only on the CPT-LHR (they definitely have a spare aircraft should one be grounded because it' due for a MX check or grounded because of a technical problem) and JNB-LHR flights, FRA will see the A340-600 so if the 744's are assigned on another European route it would probably be ZHR or MXP. But according to what you say, it looks like only LHR will still see 747's. HKG already sees the A340-600.

The also use the 744s on routes to Luanda,Dakar and Windhoek(I think still to WDH)which uses up some utilisation but not enough to cover 1 plane for a week.

Is there any truth to the rumour they will return to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale with a thrice weekly service from J'Burg? This was reported in some African newspapers (I read it in a Cape Verdean publication), but that's all I've heard of it.

They'll have more than 3 planes. A 4th is being delivered this October.

HKG will be operated by a combination of A340-200 and -600.

Are you sure about SAA will coming to FLL or MIA again? This is already seen onto their post of last month about SAA. It would be great to see A346 is coming to ATL. This is long haul nonstop from ATL-JNB or CPT. It was much more than 14 hrs flight. My friend Ryan Gaddis did flew on SAA and he got very nice trip. Well, talk ya later!

The 2 surplus B 744s can be wisely used on SA-Australia flights as there is a lot of traffic between the two nations plus then connecting onwards from SA to entire Africa and Europe too!

Or convert the 2 B 744s to freighters if they are going to be lying around...they would prove to be I bet pretty successful for SAA as freighters for flights to FRA-CDG-LHR-USA-BOM-SHJ and SYD.

To answer some questions:

As as been said, the 4th A340-600, ZS-SND arrives in November
ZS-SNE arrives in November
ZS-SNF arrives in December
ZS-SNG arrives in January.

Thus SAA will have SEVEN A340-600's by January!! The airline will also receive one or two more ex-Lufthansa A340-200's (SAA currently have 4) by Feb and the first 2 A340-300E's arrive in Feb and March 2004.

SAA now only has 4 B747-300's (ZS-SKA and B have been taken out of the fleet now) which are currently used on a few flights to London, Paris, Frankfurt and regular flights to Perth.They will be progressivly replaced as the A340's arrive. Perth will be the last B747-300 route, A340's taking over in March.

3 B747-200's are still airworthy to act as back-up/spare aircraft until December. The last B747SP will do its last scheduled flight to Bangkok at the end of October.

SA 203 leaves daily from Johannesburg at 19:40, arrives in Dakar at 01:55, departs from Dakar at 03:15 to arrive in New York at 07:10.
SA202 returns Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from SA - New York">JFK at 17:55 directly to Johannesburg to arrive at 14:40.
SA204 returns from SA - New York">JFK on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays at 17:55, arrives in Dakar at 05:35, to leave again at 06:35 to arrive in Johannesburg at 16:35
During winter in the Northern hemisphere, from 26 October till 8 February next year, this schedule will change to:
Flights on the Boeing 747-400 departs as SA203 from Johannesburg at 20:45 to arrive in Dakar at 03:00 and leaves Dakar at 04:15 to arrive at SA - New York">JFK 07:10.
SA202 leaves Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from SA - New York">JFK at 17:55 to arrive in Johannesburg at 15:30.
SA204 returns on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays at 17:55 to arrive in Dakar at 06:35 and leaves Dakar at 07:50 to arrive in Johannesburg at 17:50.
From 9 February flights on the Airbus A340-600 leaves Johannesburg as SA203 at 20:25 to arrive in Dakar at 02:50 - leaves Dakar at 04:05 to arrive 07:10 at SA - New York">JFK.
SA202 returns on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from SA - New York">JFK at 17:55 to arrive in Johannesburg at 15:40.
SA204 returns on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays from SA - New York">JFK at 17:55 to arrive in Dakar at 06:45, leaves Dakar at 8:00 and arrives in Johannesburg at 18:10.

I wonder why SAA didn't pick up any of the new 345s for their JFK-JNB or JFK-CPT routes when they decided to revamp their fleet. If I'm not mistaken, the 345 can fly either direction, non-stop.

SAA were quite keen on the 2 ex-Canada A345's they were on offer this year. I understand they have decided against these as, due to their smaller size, they are not really suited to SAA's needs on the USA routes.

SAA is apparently looking at the A340-600HGW so don't be surprised to see an order sometime of A346HGW's and A380's to replace the current B747-400's

Tell me SAA201 - is there are reason why SAA's new Airbus aircraft are not being named ? I used to love the old Mountain names on the 747 classics, and the new Africanised city names on the 744's - seems a shame to drop the aircraft names now.

SAA SUSPENDS BANGKOK, THAILAND SERVICE, GROWS HONG KONG ROUTE

25 August, 2003, JOHANNESBURG: Because of poor profits, South African Airways (SAA) will suspend its service to and from Bangkok, Thailand from 31 October but will begin operating daily to and from Hong Kong in November..
Presently SA288 operates between Johannesburg to Bangkok on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, departing at 19h20 and arriving at 11h20 the next morning. SA289 returns from Bangkok to Johannesburg on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays leaving at 23h15 and arriving in Johannesburg at 05h15.

Any passengers booked on this route after October will be re-routed to Bangkok via Hong Kong.

SAA will continue to monitor this market and may revisit the route in the future if profitable opportunities arise.

At the moment, SAA is investing in growing its Asian market by building onto its Hong Kong route. From November, SAA will operate a daily frequency to the Asian city. The demand for seats between Johannesburg and Hong Kong is strong and the Asian island is SAA main cargo airport.
