Making A Last Trip On A Classic Airliner

I'm just curious about why some members are so hooked on making that last trip on a classic airliner like the 747-200/300, the 727 and DC-9's..just to mention a few. What is it exactly that drives this urge? Is it the desire to do something you might never be able to do again? Is it because of a different kind of flight on older airplanes?

Just curious...

The fact that you will most likely never fly on that type of plane again. I wish i would have been able to fly on an AA DC-10. I never got to do that but i did get to taxi in one from the hanger to the terminal when i was 14. That was AWSOME.

When you look to the airliner world in our days and you just see Airbuses and Boeings you can really fast fly all their families in a short time. Many years ago you had much more types so you always wanted to try something different. Today you see most of the classic airliners going really fast. Take for example the 727, long gone in Europe is going too in USA. The DC-9 the same, you have a few in Europe and in USA, the 737-200 is ending too and even newer airliners are getting rare like the MD11. When I fly normally I know that I will not get nothing really special but if there is I'll try to get it. The only time I flew the DC-10 was in 1998 when I travelled with my family to USA. We had a flight from Chicago to Seattle and I went to United homepage to see what flights they had. I saw a 744, a 777 and a DC-10. The 744 and 777 were direct flights, the DC-10 was via Denver. Of course I booked my flight in the DC-10. Then sometimes you get great surprises and that's what I had, shortly before we landed in Denver the F/A told us not to take our stuff out because we would board the plane latter. But just a few moments before landing the same F/A said that we should take all our stuff out and move to a diferent gate, that looked quite strange. The UA DC-10 that we flew was with the old livery so I though probably they would move the plane to another gate afterwards so I walked to the new gate to see that there was another DC-10 parked there with the new UA livery, I realized then that we were going to fly another DC-10. So instead of just flying 1 DC-10 with an extra landing and take-off in Denver I flew two DC-10's!!!
Second time I had a quite outstanding experience was last December. I booked with BA a trip from LIS to SFO via LHR, everything was ok until I had someone that found out a better fare with SWISS flying LIS LAX via ZRH. The point was that I was going to fly in a MD11. The MD11 is beeing retired from SWISS really soon so I was glad I could fly in it. But the most interesting thing was that just a few days ago I found out that the SWISS MD11 I flew in December is beeing withdrawn now - HB-IWM, so I guess it was great to fly it before it was over.
When you have examples like this you stay really very nostalgic and think how great chance you had to fly some particular examples of airliners.

I went to Beirut when things there were still a little hairy to get a ride on a pair of 707s (actually I got the same aircraft in both directions). It was a proper time-warp experience, open hatracks and big round lights in the ceiling that changed colour with the time of day, stars etc. Wonderful stuff, thank you MEA!

I don't think a final ride on, say, an MD11 has the same cache, that's more of a symbolic ritual since a ride on an MD11 is more or less the same as the experience you'd have on a 767 or A300-600R. (Except for the unstabilised approaches and resulting possibility of landing inverted, like FedEx at EWR, Mandarin at HKG or whatever.) Get me a ride on Concorde, a Comet 4, a DC8, a Caravelle. But a 767-200, DC10, etc, it's not really a unique experience so I wouldn't be that fussed unless I'd never been on one.

The examples I gave were the best ones I could get with such a poor offer we have from the "market". Besides that you don't have any chance to get any rides now in the 707, DC-8, Caravelle, Comet, Bac 1-11 or VC-10.
When I flew in the 707 ( Varig 1980, TAP 1982 and 1983 ) it was not a big deal then.... lots of airlines still operated the type, so maybe now a ride in a DC-10 and a MD11 is ordinary but I tell you it will be wild very soon!!!
