Not that UL's commercials are funny, but adopting American Rhapsody as the official theme is classy and really captures American culture.
Southwest's 'You're now free to move about the country' is also clever.

I agree, Flybynight. I think WN's "Wanna get away?" commercials are very clever as well as the "*DING* You are now free to move about the country." slogan. B6 has several good ones too at http://jetblue.com/havefun/media/media.html.

Southwest's television commercials, especially those that portray an embarassing personal situation followed by "...when you have to get away," ending with what sounds like a Captain's voice announcing "you are now free to move about the country" are the best present-day airline ads IMO.

N243NW - Jet Blue commercials are great. Too bad the flight from SEA to JFK is a redeye flight. I took it once.
How come I can't remember the DL MD11 commercial? Must have been in the early 90's when the only thing I cared about was partying.

I have to say the best airline commercial I've seen is bmi's hemorrhoids commercial. They showed a man sitting in his seat looking very unconformtable, and a flight attend walks up, looks at him, and says "Hemorrhoids." The passenger then shows a relieved look, and the camera pans to show that he had been working on a crossword puzzle and the answer was, indeed, hemorrhoids. Someone at bmi had a good sense of humor!

I don't know how many years i don't see an airline commercial on TV.
A few years ago, perhaps 1993 or something like that, PGA portugalia Airlines sponsored some TV programs on SIC television, in portugal.
The sponsored programs were the "Jornal da noite" (night information) and also the program "PLAYBOY Late Night" !!!! UAUUUUUUU
What they wanted to mean with that.... a serious airline sponsoring a program like that.... my god... Or they wanted to state that their flight attendents were so hot like the girls on the program? eheheh or they will offer a free shag in flight... ehehhe
Crazy times!! but i miss a good airline commercial a lot of time i don't see one on portuguese televion... the last i saw was that one of British Airways with that YANNI music... - "THE WORLD's FAVOURITE AIRLINE!"

American's commercials that aired a few months after September 11 that ended "Proud to bear the name...American" were among the best I've ever seen. The music, the scenes of AA aircraft and employees, everything was incredible. I remember one was named "Engine" however I can't recall the name of the other. There used to be a website, aapride.com, which featured them but it's since been shut down. I also liked Delta's "Adiemus" commercials. Delta always comes to mind when hearing that song. Lastly, Frontier's "A whole different animal" commercial are very clever. All of them are extremely well done, and can be found off Frontier's website at:

FlyCMH: I agree w/ u w/ AA's. For "pride" sake i loved their motto "Proud to bear the name...American".
Also again agree w/ all of u guys regarding SouthWest's "U r not free to move..." very catchy.
And also love our ads from JetBlue. Very catchy songs (that get stuck in my head at times). My fav's are the "subway" commercial and one of our newest ones from this year done at LGB (Tune has..."I can't stop this feeling...deep inside of me...")

On SNL after 9/11/02 hey had one of those fake comercials:
"statistics show that terrorists are muslum males between the ages of 15-60 so we give them the most thorough check in the industry" "some may call it profiling..." I forget what they said next, but at the end they say "bing your tweezers!"
my favorite REAL commercial is the WN "try doing your job on ice" commmercials for the NHL. they have people doing normal jobs on ice and falling down and stuff! funny!

My personal favorites include the BA commercial with the crew of the ISS (or perhaps MIR) eating "airline food" while two guys in a BA shuttle are dining extravagantly and watching the tele.
The Alaska airlines commercials from the 80s were pretty cute too. I especially like the one where you had this poor passenger crammed into a seat with all sorts of "airline nightmare" scenarios going on around him (such as two really big guys sitting around him dancing in synch to music on headphones).

The old Ansett Australia commericals from the mid 1990's were good. They featured the 747-300(Ansett called them "spaceships")in flight and showed inside the plane too. Another good one from the early 1990's is the Compass Airlines commercial. I still remember how it goes- "Compass, we're your airline". And it showed all the crew standing in front of an MD80. Pity they disappeared.

: CO had a great one a couple years ago during the "Subway" series, it showed Joe Torre sitting in a CO Business First seat on a flight about to depart.
