Because we have here friends that like to deal with numbers here it goes the oficial figures of TAP for the first 6 months of 2003.
Looking closely and just analysing numbers it looks like TAP is recovering, we'll see in the end of this year.
Results of the first 6 months: - 20.2 million Euros (*)
(*) The first 6 months of 2002 had a result of - 57.2 million Euros
Looking closely to these numbers it's interesting to see how the numbers are improving in Brazil and Africa, I'm very happy with Africa, that looks that even with BA now taking a closer look to Angola TAP is doing great up there. Brazil is also good but I know that TAP is investing very strongly in this market, and seeing how VARIG is doing it's good to see the fugures rising.
I'm a little dissapointed with USA market, looks like leaving JFK is getting some bad feedback! Venezuela used to be a great market for TAP, lots of emigrants live there but it looks like with the situation there things will not improve soon.
Madeira and Azores have now big competition from SATA and Air Luxor so it's going to be a big had work for TAP to recover!

That's is very interesting, I wonder what's TAP thinking about that? You know that in late 80's TAP flew for a few months LIS/LAX with the L1011-500. They wanted mostly to get the "Disneyland" market of Portugal, but as you might expected they dropped the line really fast! I don't know if they're planning to have the same kind of strategy or try to open a line to reach some market of that area or even get some Central/South America market to Europe, we'll see. If it works I'm sure MIA fans will love to see the 343/313 and eventually in the future the 332.

I too am curious about the MIA possibility. I don't know of a large Portuguese population in Florida, and TAP already has flights to South America, so I am not sure if this would be to code share to South America.
I am also surprised about the drop in demand for flights to the USA. The flights are catering to VFR (visiting friends and relatives) traffic mostly, and these people usually fill up the planes fairly easily. This is evident in the YYZ to Portugal market, where flights are almost always full, even at high ticket prices on the charter airlines.
I hope to see TAP improve their financial situation.

Florida's native Portuguese commuity is not very large, but it is the largest outside of the Northeast. However, what is large is a Portuguese commuity from Venezuela. Portuguese is a widely spoken language here in Miami, but, of course, it is of the Brazilian dialect.
