CEO Says NWA "on The Verge" Of Joining Sky Team

Now, Anderson said, the three domestic partners are on the verge of forming "the strongest alliance in the world" with KLM, Air France and Alitalia.

"We hope that as the SkyTeam alliance matures, one day you'll see an Alitalia airplane and Air France airplane here in Minneapolis," Anderson said.

The SkyTeam alliance, which is led by Air France and Delta, has expressed interest in bringing Northwest and Continental into its partnership, but deals have not been finalized.

Northwest executives are optimistic that the carrier will become a SkyTeam alliance member. "It will give us the scope and breadth of a worldwide network," Anderson said. "When we call on 3M, they will then have a single transportation plan that will take them to their plants in South America, Thailand, Europe and Russia."

The chief executive of Northwest Airlines assured a Minneapolis business group Tuesday that the airline will keep its headquarters in Minnesota, and that Northwest will continue to expand its route network through partnerships with other airlines.

"There's a pervasive rumor in the community from time to time that Northwest is moving its headquarters," Anderson said. "I'm here to say that rumor is categorically false."

That comment drew sustained applause from about 225 people who attended a Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce breakfast at Le Meridien hotel in downtown Minneapolis.

Some of his predecessors discussed moving Northwest's headquarters, but Anderson said he "never thinks about it."

"We are a Minnesota company. We've been here 77 years," Anderson said.

A lot of good information in the full story above. He also talks about how some of the CRJ's they are getting could be going to Mesaba. Also, the use of Regional Jets is expected to increase.

Personally, I hope NWA never leaves MSP as it's headquarters. It would be a huge blow to the Minnesota economy.

Having Air France and Alitalia flying into MSP would be great also. We need more foreign carriers at MSP.

I am not sure what you mean...not a surprise obviously...this has been coming for a long time and hopefully by the end of the year it can be finalized. It will be nice to fly to Italy again, maybe even bringing back the Milan flight out of DTW. Did anyone else catch the short story about us and KLM signing another long term maitenence agreement. We will do all the 777 for KLM at US gateways and they of course will do all the A330 at European gateways for at least 15 years.

No where in the article does it talk about DL, NWA and CO merging. They are only talking about the three carriers, who have been in an alliance since June, joining the Sky Team alliance which inlcludes Air France and Alitalia.

No need to pick a new name for an airline, it's only an alliance.

BTW... A code-share IS the first step in a merger.

I'm not upset or anything, I guess I didn't understand what the DNC airline thing had anything to do with either this post or the article.

I'm a farmer in Minnesota, so any of this doesn't affect me in any way. (Although I do like that I can now get miles on NW when ever I fly on DL. That would have been nice when last winter when we took DL from MSP to MIA.)

I'm just very interested in local aviation happenings and like to report when any news from the "home office" comes out.

BTW I don't quite agree on the whole alliance becomes a merger idea. Most alliances just stay that way, an alliance

As far as Minnesota markets, you may actually have an option other than NWA in the future because of the alliance.

Anything that brings more airlines into MSP (especially foreign carriers) can only be good as far as I'm concerned.

There's still a large contentious issue of the Southeast Asian gap in Skyteam's presence.

Malaysia Airlines has reiterated that it is still not looking to join an alliance as it feels itself as a company to be in a rather weak and vulnerable position (if it were to join an alliance at this stage).

Interestingly however, MAS and Garuda both announced a large code-share and cooperative agreement earlier this month which encompasses their route networks within the Southeast Asian region and several European and Australian markets.

Both MAS and Garuda have strong partnership links with KLM, whilst MAS also has strong marketing links with Korean Air. MAS has also expressed an interest in returning to the Mexican market (which could possibly involve dealings with Aeromexico) and continues to work on expanding its French market - and even hinted at code-sharing options with Air France (pre-SARS).

Delta Airlines meanwhile launched code-sharing flights with Korean Air into Kuala Lumpur late last year...

We shall have to watch this space I expect...
