Air India will reroute AI 122 of 23 September via Ahmedabad to cater for the additional demand to that destination due to the Navratri festival in the area.
The flight will now operate with the following schedule (all times in IST ie. GMT+5.5) :
This is believed to be the first scheduled nonstop flight into Ahmedabad from Europe. The runway there was only recently resurfaced to accomodate Boeing 747s.

And here I was excited, thinking maybe it would be a dedicated service. Anyone remember the London-Moscow-Amritsar-Delhi 707 service- think it was still operating in the '80's.

wasnt AI planning on flying Bangalore-FRA-SFO?
No. That was a rumor that came out in some paper or the other but never had any teeth to it. AI is however launching BLR-BOM-FRA-ORD direct flights from December.

Oops I stand corrected- the 707 did indeed terminate in BHX.
Glad somebody remembered- my memory must be playing tricks on me- pretty soon I might convince myself that Garuda is a world-class airline!

On a side note, Uzbekistan Airlines is likely to add flights to Ahmedabad and Thiruvananthapuram soon. They already fly to Delhi (4x a week) and Amritsar (7x a week). I guess more feeder traffic for their flights to Birmingham!

It would make sence for Air India to have a dedicated service from Ahmedabad and Amritsar to the UK since most indians who travel there seem to be from Gujrat and the Punjab.

Air India would like nothing more than to be able to serve AMD-LHR nonstop, but until more LHR slots become available the limited resources have to be allocated to the hub markets, namely BOM and DEL.

As a matter of fact how many BOM-LHR slots are there for AI
The bilateral awards Air India a total of 17 frequencies between India and LHR. To date, slots have only been made available for 11 weekly services split between BOM and DEL.
