Probability Of New LH Service To Western U.S.?

Hi guys,

Just a question that's been in my mind most of the day. I'm looking at LH's map of US destinations right now, and wondering, based on what I see, if they might expand in the western US soon.

I'm curious because I do like LH and I would like to see them serve more US airports in my area. LAS of course would be welcome, and SEA looks to be a canditate as well, simply because LH has service to YVR, and PDX, but not SEA yet. It would seem logical that they might look into service to SEA.

But what do you think?

Also, not to be an annoyance...I know I bring up SLC alot, but I would go nuts if LH were to announce service into Salt Lake. Mostly wishful thinking as we don't really have much international service in SLC and I'd love to see a prominent carrier like LH consider it. It would be VERY neat.  Smile

But basically it's the holes in the routemap that leave me wondering. DEN, PHX, PDX, all western gateways, and within the space between those cities, lies Las Vegas...and Salt Lake. It does seem logical to me that they might be considered in the future. And SEA is just obvious almost, being between two other gatways.

What other areas do you see a potential for Lufthansa to start service to in the future? I sure do hope to see some of these western gateways see service. How about yourself, where could you imagine LH flying to in the years to come. What do you hope for?

I hope this makes for an interesting discussion. I'd love to hear your thoughts. I remain hopeful for more international service in the west, everytime I go to LAX I feel we are missing out. And PHX is kinda similar to SLC in market, I feel.

Because of Seattle proximity to Portland and Vancouver, I really cannot see Lufthansa starting service there. Mi dispiace......And you can forget about Salt lake city........

Maybe I'm just biased, but I think that PHX is a little higher up in the market than SLC...not only an HP superhub, but a Southwest 'Hub' (about 25 gates), services to Hawaii and Europe and a lot more service to Mexico than SLC. I know that SLC is a DL hub, but it seems like mroe of a focus city to me. Do all the domestics serve SLC?

"under consideration" are:

FRA-STL was on the list, but I am not sure whether it still is.
I don't know whether the latter three are "western U.S" to you

Las Vegas seems to little a business location for LH, but I think DE and LT operate there.

I think Seattle's strong business community enables it to support it's own flights to Germany without drawing passengers away from Vancouver or Portland.

So I would put Seattle and San Diego at the top of the list, SLC I would not consider unless DL joins Star (then only maybe). When DL had a hub in FRA I don't believe they ever flew there from SLC.

Well, lets use a little logic here Aloha....
IF SLC could support any type of european flight, trust me, CDG would already be on the map. This flight would have tremendous feed, and its not there. That's showing the SLC communities demand for Europe is not very good. Won't happen, trust me.
Let me re-do the under consideration
FRA-MSP(some problem with NW)
FRA-STL, yeah I don't know about this one, LH execs were seen here two individual times when PDX got the flight. Don't know if its still in the runnings.
Supposedly, DEN-MUC has been shelved.

You are correct, DL never flew SCL-FRA nonstop.

I do not understand why DEN-MUC was shelved, seemed like the most logical choice. My bet would be the Seattle service. No idea why SAN would be served, when British tried so hard on their LHR-SAN flights, that were ultimately canceled.

Here's one...Portland. Oh, sorry, they just started that. No SEA. Star Defiance has that one covered.

You keep mentioning PHX service. PHX is getting, or already has had, its LH service axed, right? I remember reading on their website that they were pulling out of DFW and PHX. Did that ever happen? If so, will the flights be re-allocated to somwhere else in the west?

Paddy, no, service to PHX was not axed.

I have been looking at LH flight iteneraries and schedules quite often over the past several weeks and if you go to the LH website you will notice they are offering special fares into and out of PHX...and their site also lists DEN-MUC service still being in existence.

So unless the site hasn't been updated in quite a long time, it appears that DEN-MUC still exists, and PHX is still a strong destination for LH, try checking the timetable, you can get several flights to Germany which connect through ORD and IAD, and two flights a day that fly direct from PHX to Germany.

PHX is not dead. I wonder where all this bad news seems to be coming from, because none of it appears on LH's website. It appears that all is going just fine.

I think that the misunderstanding about LH in PHX came from the way the press release was worded when they decided to scale back service during the war. I initially read it as that they were pulling out alltogether.

They do still fly to PHX - currently operating 763 and returning to 343s in October. The service is not back to daily however.

I am pretty sure that the only place LH flies from Denver is currently FRA.

My belief is that LH will continue tracking the PDX-FRA flight, and if loads start dropping off, I think you might see them move it up to SEA, or somewhere else in the west.

although LH still serves PHX, it is by far the worst performing of its US services and axing/suspending it was considered several times.

and about SEA, i wouldn´t preclude SEA from future services as some do on this board. i agree that it would seem odd if LH would serve SEA and PDX, but has anyone ever thought about the possibility that LH might serve SEA from MUC, not from FRA? that would reduce the overlap somehow, especially considering that SK serves from CPH.

just my thoughts

If only pure sweetness was offered, why's this bitter taste left in my mouth.
