I was browsing through the current issue of Airliner World today at the bookstore and there was a short little article about Gulf Air planning on resuming US service and adding a few key European markets in the very near future. Would Gulf Air return to their original US destinations which were JFK and IAH? I remember that one of the main reasons these flights failed was because of the routing. The IAH flight I believe was from Abu Dhabi-Geneva-JFK-IAH. Maybe someone has more info and can confirm.

Sources have mentioned that yes this is true and GF hopes to restart USA flights to SFO and JFK only. The route will be A 340-300 operated BAH-GVA-JFK and BAH-GVA-SFO. AUH wasnt mentioned at all.

Apparently they have almost managed to get a huge US Govt contract which guarantees them X number of seats sold per flight out of SFO and JFK plus cargo. These include seats for US Military personnel for Iraqi operations.

Theyre flying to SFO mainly due to the Iraqi reconstruction contracts are awarded to companies based in the SFO area + Silicon Valley for Indian pax.

This would be very good news if it turns out to be true.

Any information yet on what frequencies they plan to have or when the flights would leave bahrain or abu dhabi? Or when they want to launch this?

Thanks,
Tim

So they would be flying the same exact routes as EK when EK starts US service?

SFO is supposedly going to be 3 times a week and JFK 4 times a week...unlike EK, GF will fly via GVA and will have 5th freedom rights on all their GVA-JFK-GVA and GVA-SFO-GVA flights.

GVA because a lot of UN agencies, missions and political agencies are based there which have a big say in the future of IRAQ so GF wants their business!

GF have especially timed their flights whereby their USA flights will connect within 2 hrs for their BAGHDAD / BASRA flights.

so GF's US return is true? I put that on some SFO thread a while ago, and people thought I was crazy. Well, anyway, does anyone know what the startup dates are?

I'm sure theres also quite a lot of freight/mail to transport around which could also make the route that much more profitable. I'm sure if GF market their flights well they could do very well out of GVA.

What times are these Baghdad/Basra flights supposed to leave Bahrain. You have any indications of the times at which the flights would pass through Geneva?

They should get in a Codeshare with Northwest and fly to DTW. I still don't understand why DTW is so underserved by Arabic airlines with the largest arabic population outside the mideast being there.

Actually, GF used to, about eight years ago, route via LCA.

I think the Arab-American population that lives in Detroit is for the most part Lebanese in origin. If Middle Eastern Airlines (MEA) ever gets authority to fly to the USA again they better grab a few good condition 747-400's because the flights between Detroit and Beirut will be full year-round!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I think it's smart that Gulf Air will fly between Bahrain and the USA via Geneva. Just the Bahrain-Geneva route will guarantee packed flights from all the officials from the various UN agencies based in the Geneva area!

Let them wait a little and they will fly with 380 - MEA has such a nice Airbus-fleet. One of the youngest I have heared.

My question which hasn't been answered yet is when do they plan to relaunch these routes?

Not ONE of the youngest. It is THE youngest.

A 747-400 or A380 would be overkill for MEA. What I could see MEA getting in the future is either the 777-200ER or the A340-300. These would be ideal for routes to Paris (largest Lebanese population in the world), Montreal, Detroit, New York, Sao Paulo, and Sydney.

All these places have very large Lebanese populations.

Let me say that a 747-400 or A380 would be good for MEA during the summer season on the Paris route.

MEA operates 2 daily flights to Paris, one on an A321 and one on an A330. Both flights were sold out one month in advance during the summer. It was simply crazy.

This is in addition to Air France's daily 777 flight and summer seasonal 1x weekly 747-400 flight.

Yes MEA should seriously look into EWR/JFK, DTW and YYZ-YUL services with an A 340-600 or A 340-500 nonstop from BEIRUT.

Gulf Air have detailed plans concerning their resumption of United States services.

Suffice to say that they are highly innovative and will be very successful when they launch.

That's all I can tell you, sorry!

Actually, NYC does not have a very large Lebanese population at all. Most people of Arab origin in the tri-state area are Yemeni, Moroccan or Egyptian.

Sao Paulo does have a large Lebanese population, but they’ve been there for generations and are more or less detached from Lebanon.

It’s different with the other cities as they’ve had more recent Arab immigration.

At the end of 2004, I would like to re-visit this subject and see how many of the above airlines actually will fly into SFO.
