Frontier Airlines Partners With Horizon Air for Frontier JetExpress Regional Jet Service

DENVER (Sept. 18, 2003) – Frontier Airlines (Nasdaq: FRNT) today announced it has signed a 12-year agreement with Seattle-based Horizon Air, a subsidiary of Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE: ALK), under which Horizon will operate regional jet service as Frontier JetExpress, effective Jan. 1, 2004. Under the agreement, Frontier will pay Horizon a base margin and performance-based incentives to operate flights as Frontier JetExpress and Frontier will maintain control of scheduling and destinations. Horizon initially will operate four 70-seat Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft beginning Jan. 1, 2004, and will operate nine 70-seat Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft by May 30, 2004. Horizon replaces Frontier’s current regional jet operator, Mesa Airlines, whose agreement with Frontier to operate five 50-seat aircraft expires Dec. 31, 2003.

“Our regional jet service has provided extra depth to our business strategy, and we are excited at the opportunity to partner with a top quality airline like Horizon Air,” said Frontier President and CEO Jeff Potter. “Horizon’s commitment to customer service matches our philosophy, and we look forward to a successful partnership that will allow us to bring Frontier’s affordable fares to more communities.”

"Horizon is committed to providing our new customers at Frontier the same high level of reliability and service that our customers in the Northwest have come to expect from Horizon."

Horizon, the eighth largest regional airline in the U.S., currently serves 43 cities in six western states and British Columbia and Alberta, with average boardings of 390,000 passengers per month. Horizon’s current fleet of 59 aircraft consists of 37-seat Bombardier Q200 turboprops, and new 70-seat Bombardier Q400 turboprops and CRJ-700 regional jets, which Horizon began taking delivery of in May 2001. Horizon was the North American launch customer for both new aircraft and the average age of the fleet is three years.

so where are these aircraft going to be placed? New cities or just replacing the current CRJ's?

Although the routes have not yet been finalized, it's pretty safe to assume that the original 4 Horizon planes will take over most - if not all - of the present Jet Express routes flown by MESA.

But MESA flies 5 CRJ's for Frontier and Horizon will fly 9. So I'd think it's equally safe to assume that there will be new cities. They don't need 9 planes to do the work of 5.

All of the Jet Express markets have been very strong with maybe the exception of ICT. The added capacity the 700 provides will be a welcome addition. Not to say working with a class operation like Horizon.

From what I also understand, one of the 9 RJs will be a spare.

There should be a better idea about what type of service will go to Fresno in the next 2 or 3 weeks. Mainline is a strong possibility but they are awaiting word on a grant before deciding.

Here is the story guys. Was made official just this morning.

Horizon Air announced today it has signed a 12-year agreement with Denver-based Frontier Airlines to operate regional jet service as Frontier JetExpress, effective Jan. 1, 2004.

Under the 12-year agreement, Horizon will initially operate four 70-seat Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft as Frontier JetExpress beginning Jan. 1, 2004, and will eventually operate nine CRJ-700s as Frontier JetExpress by May 30, 2004. Horizon will employ a combination of new aircraft deliveries and an optimization of their current flight schedules to provide the aircraft for the new service.

Horizon replaces Frontier's current regional jet operator, Mesa Airlines, whose agreement with Frontier expires Dec. 31, 2003. The Frontier JetExpress routes currently operated from Denver by Mesa include Albuquerque, Austin, Boise, Oklahoma City, Ontario, San Jose, Tucson, and Wichita. The routes and schedules of Horizon's Frontier JetExpress flights have not been finalized.

Horizon's crews -- pilots and flight attendants -- will fly the aircraft, which will be painted in Frontier JetExpress livery and Horizon's mechanics will provide maintenance on them. Horizon expects to eventually base about 100 pilots, 100 flight attendants and 30 maintenance personnel in Denver for their Frontier JetExpress operation. Frontier employees will perform airport customer service operations and take reservations for the Horizon Frontier JetExpress flights.

Founded 22 years ago, Horizon Air has grown to become the nation's eighth largest regional airline, serving nearly 5 million passengers last year. Horizon serves 43 cities throughout Idaho, California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Arizona, British Columbia and Alberta. Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines are subsidiaries of Alaska Air Group, Inc.

Currently in its 10th year of operations, Denver-based Frontier Airlines is the second largest jet service carrier at Denver International Airport with a fleet of 38 aircraft. Frontier and its affiliate Frontier JetExpress currently serve 40 U.S. cities with 200 daily flights.

i could see QX linking its existing markets with F9. You could have the F9 Jet Express serving DEN-BIL/GEG/EUG/FAT, and linking up to the flights that QX already has. They could also undercut UA on these routes, and possibly make good money off of the routes. What does everyone else think about this?

Glad to hear that!! Frontier was having MAJOR problems with Mesa....here in TUS their flight was cancelling sometimes 2 or 3 times a week. We felt their pain at HP since Mesa/Freedom have been screwing us for the past 2 years with horrible operations.

It would seem that QX flights bearing the F9* designation will be limited to routes that are non-competing with existing AS and AS* (operated by Horizon) flights, so long as QX continues to be owned by Alaska Air Group. That would seem to preclude otherwise logical routes for F9* opb QX, such as DEN-EUG/GEG/YVR/YYC non-stops, inasmuch as these routes are served by AS/AS*, albeit through connections at SEA or PDX.

But then again... if such routes can be flown profitably by QX on behalf of F9 without diluting traffic and yields from AS/AS* as seen through the eyes of Alaska Air Group, we may well see these as well as other routes that would nicely extend the coverage of F9's network west of the Rocky Mountains.

Hmmmm.... How many seats does the A318 seat? I wonder if they could have just served some of these markets a little bit less frequently with a slightly larger aircraft. Plus, then there's the PTVs Big thumbs up

I wonder how the fate of the DEN-ICT-DEN route will be because currently the loads on the flight aren't doing too well and the larger aircraft won't help. It's good news, though, hopefully we can keep Horizon here. They seem to have an excellent reputation.

Have just returned from a meeting about this whole thing...the tails will have animals...just not sure which ones yet. There will be a Horizon logo near the boarding door. All crews will wear Horizon uniforms etc, maintenance as well. As was stated earlier there will be no routes added that adversely affect AS. There will also be two "white tail" aircraft that will have neither QX nor F9 logo on them so they can backfill either Express or Mainline Horizon operations.

With the excpetion of a CRJ that will be freed up by AS taing over the Long Beach service the others will be new (a couple accelerated) deliveries (2 in December). A/c that we don't have already anyway and/or ones we were not anticipating on getting at the moment.

PDX and SEA will not be affected.
