In the Chicago-Sun Times today... there was an article about big planes and the A346 was in it. The aircraft is banned in 31 spots at ORD and only 4 gates can support the '346. Apparently, they were supposed to ops the '346 today but there wasn't enough demand so they're gonna ops it on October 5!  Smile It needs a lot of room for it to make a 90 degree angle....

Sweet!! I was wondering when we were going to get a '600 at ORD?!? One question though, what do mean banned in 31 spots? You mean gates? I've flown from the international terminal many times and I'm sure there must be more than four gates there that can support the 346. Is this going to be a replacement for the 343 now, or is it going to be used only on occassions for more demanding days/seasons (summer I suppose)?

Not so much banned as they aren't the right parameters.

There may be only 4 gates that can support it - it is the longest airplane in the world, and ORD also doesn't get any 777-300 service. They may just not have gates boxed for planes of that length.

Even the A380 will be about 2 meters shorter.

But thing is, the first two cabin doors should be (the first is definitely) within in reach of ORD terminals...but I guess the rear of airplane may stick out too much into the taxiways...?

Additionally, I don't think any U.S. airport gets regular 777-300 service. I'm not sure about that, but I did check the photo database, and the only 777-300s photographed in the U.S. were in Washington coming from the Everett plant.

It looks like IB is rotating this aircraft type through stations where its future concentrated schedule will be.

MEX, HAV, EZE, JNB, JFK, SJU, SDQ etc.

There was also talk on the radio that ORD taxiways may be difficult for A346 turns. Is it true?

Let's go see it? I live in Chicago and would love to go see that monster. As long as October 5th isn't a school day and i don't have drivers ed I'm in!! I just don't feel like going alone because I don't know any good spots and going alone is pretty boring so maybe someone wants to come with?

yes it is true that the A346 might have difficulties on the taxiways.

October 5th is a Sunday. I dunno if i could go. prolly not as my parents would say no, but if someone would try and upload it to AºNet, it would almost be like me going to see it.

I'm also 16... I live in the suburbs of Chicago... near Skokie, Evanston, Niles and Des Plaines. It's awesome, sometimes at 7:00 in the morning, i'll see a UA 733 landing right above me and at my neighbour's house, they get to see the intl departures so i can easily indentify Iberia, Air France, KLM, Swiss, BA ( saw a 777 land while i was in class). It's so cool living in Chicago.

Probably because they have scheduled 772 service into ORD (744 at peak season)

"There may be only 4 gates that can support it - it is the longest airplane in the world, and ORD also doesn't get any 777-300 service. They may just not have gates boxed for planes of that length."

I somehow think thats BS land. On the top of my head I can list at least 10 gates that probably can handle a A346.
